Layering season is finally here, and with it the age-old question: how to wear a jumper over a dress? A dress is so synonymous with summer, yet a good old cosy jumper gives full-on winter vibes. Can the two co-exist? I'm here to say a big resounding ‘yes!’.
I’ve spent my entire career — nay, my entire life — trying to solve fashion’s most frequently occurring problems, including this one. And the solution can be as simple as wearing a knit jumper over a dress. During the colder months, spring dresses are an untapped resource and a great way to give your favourite jeans a break.
Jumpers and dresses are an easy combo that’s chic and cosy, with that throw-on-and-go type of ease. When done right, the fashion tip makes seasonal layering feel totally refreshed — and it’s great for transitional weather. Ahead, I’m rounding up all my favourite styling tips for how to wear a jumper over a dress.

Double down on knits
This is an outfit idea to save for those days when it’s quite literally too cold to function. A chunky textured jumper or statement cardi over a jumper dress looks incredibly elegant, but feels like you’re wearing a blanket. Love the versatility. And extra style points if your cardi has a cute print.
Knotted at the waist
You’ve probably been utilising the jumper-as-a-scarf fashion hack all season. Give it a rest, just this once, and try tying a knit around your waist instead. Pick a solid-coloured one in the same hue, or try a striped version for a little playful colour contrast and juxtaposition. This trick works with your summer dresses too — just layer another long-sleeve knit underneath for added warmth.
Cream-coloured layering
This is an outfit trick I’ve learned through years of studying Princess Kate’s style on a professional level. The royal loves an all-white look — and rightfully so. Try it this winter! All you need to do is layer a jumper over a cream or white slip dress in the same hue.
Try a textured mini
Depending on the climate and time of year, you might want to add a pair of trendy tights to this winter outfit. But apart from that, the look holds true. A long, oversized jumper over a mini dress offers a fun play on proportions.
Over something sheer
The naked-dress trend is on its way out. But there are still ways to utilise that sheer maxi dress you splurged on during 2023’s no-trousers era — one of which involves layering it under an oversized cable-knit or cardigan. Opt for a texture clash like with this striped cardi and lace skirt for added interest.
Add a button-down
Everyone knows I’m a button-down girlie through and through. And in this case, I’m right once again. Mixed in with your favourite cropped jumper and midi-dress, the addition adds extra warmth while making your 'fit feel thought-out and intentional.
Downplay a low neckline
I personally hate a low neckline; it’s not my vibe, and I do anything I can to combat it. Wearing a cashmere cardigan over top is a great way to do that. Even better: Layer another form-fitting knit top underneath for a nice textural contrast.
Try an oversized cardigan
If your winter vibe aligns with Taylor Swift’s Folklore era, this dress-and-jumper outfit will be right up your alley. A longline cardi worn over a lacy minidress will make you look ethereal and earthy in a really good way.
Monochromatic
Though I love a white-on-white look, the same rule can be applied to other colours as well. Stick to one hue throughout your layering; just be sure to mix up the shades so it doesn’t feel too monolithic.
A turtleneck and loafers
There’s just something about a turtleneck that demands to be worn with loafers. Call it dark academia or the Taylor Swift effect — either way, it’s a look worth copying.
