Hair oils are often referred to as liquid gold for dry, damaged hair. But how to use argan oil for hair correctly still throws up a lot of questions.
Made by cold-pressing kernels from Moroccan argan trees, the oil is rich in essential fatty acids and vitamin E – nutrients that help to restore moisture, boost shine and improve the strength of strands.

The trouble is, argan oil is an incredibly nourishing oil, so it's worth bearing in mind that there are some caveats about how to use it, especially on fine hair, as it can mean the difference between shiny and greasy strands. Here's what the hair experts recommend, whether you're using it as a styling aid or as an overnight treatment.
Longer, stronger hair, here we come.

What are the benefits of using argan oil on your hair?
“Argan oil is naturally rich in vitamin E and fatty acids, which makes it brilliant for restoring softness, shine and flexibility in the hair,” says Neale Rodger, style director at STIL salon. “Overall, it’s one of the easiest oils to use because it hydrates without feeling heavy or greasy when applied properly.”
Elasticity refers to how well a hair strand is able to stretch and return to its original length without snapping and is a good indication of how strong the hair is. As well as being rich in hydrating essential fatty acids, argan oil also contains polyphenols and tocopherols, known for their antioxidant properties, to protect against damage from external aggressors.
“Argan oil promotes hair health by nourishing follicles, reducing scalp inflammation, and maintaining moisture to prevent brittleness and shedding,” says Izabella Bordignon, tricologist and founder of Izabella Bordignon London hair salon. “It supports elasticity, helping the hair feel more flexible and less prone to breakage.”
“For dry or damaged hair, argan oil works like a lightweight seal over the cuticle, helping lock moisture in and smooth rough ends,” says Neale. “That’s what gives you that glossy finish rather than fluffy texture.” It's also a go-to for tackling flyaways and humidity-induced frizz.
“Argan oil can help to support scalp health because it’s soothing and conditioning, so if someone struggles with dryness or mild flaking it’s often a really nice addition to their routine,” says Neale.
However, Gem Schwartz, founder of Taylor Rose Hair salon, stresses that it shouldn't be seen as a dandruff treatment. “Argan oil may soothe a dry scalp and reduce the appearance of flakiness for some people, but it's not a true dandruff treatment,” she warns. “If dandruff is linked to an oily or inflamed scalp condition, adding oil can sometimes make it worse.”
Argan oil is also thought to provide a protective layer that shields hair from damage - both environmental and also damage caused by heat styling. “There is some evidence that topical argan oil can improve elasticity and help protect the hair fibre from damage, making it especially helpful for hair that is dry, brittle or over‑processed,” Gem notes.
How often should you put argan oil in your hair?
How often you use argan oil depends on your hair type and how frequently you wash your hair. But, says Samuel Ashcroft, principal stylist at Josh Wood Atelier, “once a week works well for most people. If your hair is coloured or chemically treated, you may benefit from using it a little more often.” But a light touch is best when it comes to fine hair – “often just a drop or two on the mid‑lengths and ends when required,” says Gem.
While you should always follow the specific instructions on the bottles of your chosen products, “a simple way to guide usage is to observe how the hair responds,” says Izabella. “If it begins to feel weighed down or greasy, it's a sign to reduce frequency. Depending on individual needs, it may also be applied lightly to the scalp. However, it is generally recommended to avoid leaving oils on the scalp for prolonged periods, to prevent build-up.”
How to use argan oil for hair: A step by step
Step 1: Shampoo, condition and then towel-dry your hair. “Damp hair absorbs oil more effectively because the cuticle is open,” says Sam.
Step 2: “Apply one to two pumps of argan oil to damp hair, focusing on the mid‑lengths and ends,” says Sam. Avoid applying the oil directly to your scalp, as it can make your roots look greasy.
Step 3: Use a wide-tooth comb to distribute the oil evenly throughout your hair.
Step 4: Style as normal.
As a gloss and to smooth flyaways:
“Brush the hair first so the argan oil distributes evenly, then warm a small amount between your palms,” says Gem. “Smooth it lightly through the mid‑lengths and ends, where the hair is naturally driest.” A good product to use for styling is Moroccanoil Original Treatment.
How to use argan oil as a deep conditioning treatment
Step 1: Apply a generous amount of argan oil to damp hair.
Step 2: “Work it through section by section, focusing on the driest areas," says Gem. "Avoid the roots and, if you have extensions, keep the oil completely away from the bonds, tapes or rings.”
Step 3: Once applied, comb it through gently and leave it on for around 20 - 60 minutes before washing, advises Gem. You can also “leave it on overnight if the hair is particularly dry or stressed from colour or heat styling,” says Neale.
Step 4: Shampoo as normal and follow with conditioner. “To remove the argan oil, apply shampoo directly to the oily areas before adding water, then emulsify, rinse thoroughly and shampoo again if needed,” says Gem. “Hair usually feels noticeably softer and smoother straight away, especially through the ends,” adds Neale.
Can you use argan oil on fine hair?
The short answer is yes – but be sure to use it sparingly to avoid weighing fine strands down. “Argan oil works best as a light smoothing product rather than a heavy treatment on fine hair,” says Gem. “Usually one or two drops on the mid‑lengths and ends is enough, as too much can make fine hair look flat or greasy.”
Spoiler: It starts with a great haircut and smart styling.

How to use argan oil as a heat protectant
Argan oil can be used to prep the hair before blow-drying. “The key is using a tiny amount through the mid-lengths and ends – one or two drops – not a pump,” says Neale. “It helps to smooth the cuticle and adds slip, which makes hair easier to style and gives a healthier finish once dry.”
If you're using a straightening iron or curling wand, you might like to layer argan oil with your regular heat protective spray.
