This season may be synonymous with blonde hair, but that's not to say brunette is out of the question for summer.

High shine brunette is the glossy, must-try shade of summer 2023 and it's ideal if you're a brunette hoping to give your hair a summer upgrade or a blonde who wants to go to the dark side.

“This hair colour trend is perfect for those who are already brunette and simply want to enhance their colour brunette hue - and it’s also great for blondes who are looking to give their hair a complete colour transformation for the summer season and that may want to take a break from the bleach,” says Tina Mehmi from the Rush Colour Workshop Team.

‌For blondes, Tina suggests starting with a bronde or light-medium brunette hue to avoid the transformation being too drastic, or you could gradually add brunette lowlights and caramel ribbons into their hair for a more dimensional take on the trend before fully taking the plunge to an all-over tint. “They may need to get their colour done more regularly at first to ensure the colour takes to the hair and to ensure the colour stays looking vibrant,” she notes.

“For those with an already brunette base, a chocolate hue is one of my favourites to add a glow to your complexion and allow your eyes to really pop. For those with darker skin tones, darker shades of brunette including Espresso-like hues are incredibly flattering against your skin tone. Espresso is more of a cool tone than Chocolate and has a richer appearance allowing to have a truly mesmerising shine. It also allows works with all eye colours,” she says.

Glossing services and tints are a fantastic way to get the perfect high shine brunette hue. However, these should also be teamed with regular in-salon and at-home treatment to ensure the hair retains its high shine finish. Tina also emphasises that a moisturising shampoo and conditioner is also a must to ensure the colour and hair is kept looking its best at all times and provided with the hydration it needs.

“The great thing about this trend is that it’s a more natural, low-maintenance colour,” she says. “Once you’ve visited the salon for a tint and are happy with the colour, you can then visit the salon for glossings/semi-permanents in between your full head tint appointments to keep the colour looking fresh and radiant.”

When it comes to styling, this hair colour looks fantastic no matter how you style it – whether it's an updo, effortless waves or straight and smooth. Tina's favourite way to style the trend? With a super sleek finish. “Use heated styling irons to give the hair a poker straight finish and smooth over with a hair serum oil or shine spray to further give the look a polished appearance.”

See, it's not just blondes who have fun.
