So, apparently Hello Kitty, she of pointy ears and whiskers fame, is not actually a cat. Our world just imploded.

According to Kitty's creators, Sanrio, she is a British school girl called Kitty White, from just outside London, with a twin sister called Mimmy.

Erm, you what now?

Christine R Yano is curating an exhibition about the cat, we mean, cartoon character, and had quite a shock when she found out.

"That's one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show. Hello Kitty is not a cat," said Christine.

"She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She's never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature.

"She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it's called Charmmy Kitty."

Ah-ha, the plot thickens. A non-cat who looks like a cat, is called Kitty and has her own cat (also called Kitty).

Next thing you know, you'll be telling us that you can't make bacon out of a guinea pig, that Simba & Pumba would never have been friends in real life or that Garfield's diet of lasagne would be seriously detrimental to his health if he was real.

Bog off Sanrio.
