There's just over a week to go before Heartstopper season 2 airs – and, with the clocks ticking more slowly than we'd like, the showrunners have released a full-length trailer to give us a taste of what's to come.
For the uninitiated, Netflix's Heartstopper is a, well, heartwarming coming-of-age meets romantic comedy TV series. It's based on the graphic novel series written by Alice Oseman, which chronicles the friendship and eventual love story between unlikely pair Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring. It also follows their wider group of friends at Truham and Higgs schools, as they all navigate teenagehood's highs and lows.
The first season was an absolutely massive success, launching the careers of many of the show's stars, most notably Yasmin Finney, who is set to star in the new season of Doctor Who alongside Sex Education's Ncuti Gatwa. It came as no surprise, therefore, when we learnt in September 2022 - months after the first season aired – that a second season was already in production, and in April this year the countdown officially began – with the announcement of the season launch date of 3 August.
The new trailer, shared earlier today, takes us through what we can expect in the new season: first off, the ongoing relationship between Nick & Charlie, as the former struggles to come out as gay and reveal their couple status to his friends, while Charlie is shouting from the rooftops, “I have a boyfriend!".
We see friends Tao and Elle's will-they-won't-they romance, with the pair apparently revealing their romantic feelings to everyone but one another.
The show will focus on “mental health issues faced by British teenagers”.

There's also a suggestion of potential communication hurdles between the couple of Tara and Darcy: "I love you… you don’t need to say it back or anything," says Tara to her girlfriend, to which Darcy just replies “Yeah”. Our hearts are literally breaking already! Oh, and let's not forget the footage of the school trip to Paris, the backdrop for who knows how much wholesome drama ahead? “They are going to be a handful today,” declares teacher and trip chaperone Mr Ajayi (played by Fisayo Akinade).
We've also seen the first few minutes of season two – which was released to the public last month – and it's beyond adorable. After a pan over Nick and Charlie's adorable photo booth pics during the season one finale, we see Charlie begin his day with a “hi” message from Nick. He responds with a “good morning boyfriend” and we almost combusted from the cuteness.
We're then introduced to a montage of scenes of Charlie going about his morning routine – getting dressed, eating breakfast, riding the bus to school – incessantly messaging Nick with a huge smile on his face. Let's face it, we've all been there during the early stages of love.
It ends with Nick coming up behind him in the classroom, covering his eyes and surprising him with an extremely cute and couply hello. Obsessed with these two always.
Here's everything else we know so far about Heartstopper season two.
According to Netflix's official synopsis, all of our favourite characters from season one are set to embark on some adventures.
It reads: “Nick and Charlie navigate their new relationship; Tara and Darcy face unforeseen challenges and Tao and Elle work out if they can ever be more than just friends. With exams on the horizon, a school trip to Paris and a prom to plan, the gang has a lot to juggle as they journey through the next stages of life, love and friendship.”
We're buzzing for the coming-of-age wholesomeness and drama that is sure to come.
Of course, Kit Connor and Joe Locke are returning as Nick and Charlie, along with William Gao (Tao), Yasmin Finney (Elle), Corinna Brown (Tara), Kizzy Edgell (Darcy), Sebastian Croft (Ben), Tobie Donovan (Isaac), Rhea Norwood (Imogen) and Jenny Walser (Tori).
There will also be a host of new characters joining the Truham and Higgs crew, including Leila Khan who will play Sahar Zahid, Nima Taleghani as a teacher called Mr Farouk (dare we fix him up with art teacher Mr Ajayi, an MVP from season one?) and Jack Barton as Nick's older brother David.
We're also going to see more of Bradley Riches, who we saw in season one as an unnamed Truham student and will return to season two as a character called James McEwan. Thibault de Montalembert is set to play Stephane, Nick’s dad. Bel Priestley and Ash Self will play new friends of Elle's Naomi and Felix.
It's set to drop on 3 August – so not long now – only on Netflix. If you can't wait that long, catch up with the first season, which is available to watch on the streaming service now.
