Josh Heuston (Dusty) was noticeably absent, which makes sense given his reduced role in season two after moving schools. It’s likely this also helped avoid filming conflicts with Dune: Prophecy, which was shot around the same time. But a little birdie told us he might pop up in an episode…
Also missing was Bird Psycho, aka Rowan, aka Sam Rechner. His revenge storyline wrapped up in season two, so it’s safe to assume his character left after being caught.
What happened in Heartbreak High season 2?
Buckle up for a Heartbreak High season two ending explainer.
Season two wrapped with Amerie discovering that Rowan was Bird Psycho. Despite his relationship with Amerie, he’d been holding onto childhood bitterness, which led to him smashing his room. The chaos caused his brother Jett to run from the house in fear — before tragically dying in a car accident.

While Rowan initially blames Amerie to some extent, he ultimately realises Jett’s death wasn’t her fault and apologises.
Alongside the Rowan storyline, season two also saw Quinni become school president, Ca$h and Darren decide to stay together, and Spider and Missy going public with their relationship.
And, of course, we can’t forget the major cliffhanger: the school is set on fire, and Malakai leaves for Switzerland, leaving plenty of questions for season three.

What will happen in Heartbreak High season 3?
According to Netflix, “In Season 3, it’s time for Hartley High’s graduating class to say ‘goodbye’ to school, and ‘hello’ to adulthood! Yet when a revenge prank goes horribly wrong, Amerie and her friends must cover up their secret or risk losing everything.”
In the trailer, we see the group try to work out who is responsible for switching on the fairground ride, Amerie struggles between her feelings for Malakai and her new man, Chloe and Sasha go through a rough patch, and Harper argues with Amerie about her future. So much drama — and “muff diving” apparently.
Season 3 is about the mystery of who turned on the carnival ride in a prank gone wrong. Our resident crew are thrown into chaos and potential crime by the incident. There are breakups, exams, university decisions, and of course, Schoolies.
Will Malakai be in Heartbreak High season 3?

Last we saw Malakai, he had written Amerie a letter to express his feelings — and then moved away with his mum. That letter, of course, was tragically lost in the school fire. RIP. So Amerie still has no idea how he really feels!
You might think Malakai’s move means he’s written out of season three, especially since he wasn’t included in the cast photo released in November 2024.
But have no fear, Malakai is back, and he doesn't seem quite over his ex-girlfriend…
