When it comes to 2024 beauty trends, “softness” is the overarching aesthetic that's leading some of our favourite looks. The halo haircut leans into this nicely with an angelic shape that majors around pretty curls and coils.
We've heard the haircut mentioned multiple times from top hair stylists as we've headed into this year, with pro hair stylist and trend forecaster, Tom Smith, describing the halo silhouette as “ethereal, curved and face-framing”.
And while softly curved curls and afros have never not looked beautiful, stylists are saying they've seen a real return to natural textures and a resurgence and celebration of the cut which has a '70s feel about it. “This spring, we see the most dramatic version of the halo silhouette in the form of natural textured and curly hair halo cuts. The crown-like shape is statuesque, regal, confident and celebrates texture and volume,” says Tom.
Here's everything you need to know about it…
What is the halo haircut?
“The halo haircut is one of the most popular styles that I’ve seen within curly and textured hair and I think it's here to stay,” says Aveda educator, Leah Hill, who is equally pro at styling all hair textures. “In a nutshell, it’s a shape and style that’s round and creates volume whilst keeping the style quite soft. As more and more people are embracing their natural textures – which I am so here for – it’s a style that can suit everybody as it can be personalised to suit your face shape. For those with curly and coily hair, it’s great when you want to add texture and volume to your style,” she says.
Who does the halo haircut work best on?
The beauty of the halo haircut is that it's a democratic chop. “It works best on curly and coily hair textures, but it can be for all hair types and textures,” says Leah. “For example, if you were more of a coily texture but didn’t have as much definition, you can still embrace the shape of your style being more rounded and soft with no sharp edges and a heavier face framing fringe. Its not about the definition, its about the shape – that’s the key thing,” she explains. Tom agrees: "while ideal on textured hair, straight hair types can get a similar shape with rounded layers and voluminous blow-drying and curling,” he says.
What should you ask your hair stylist for?
The key is to skip any sharp or blunt angles. “You want to ask for more of a rounded shape with a heavy fringe. Make sure to ask for soft face framing layers with soft rounded layers throughout to create height and volume,” says Leah.
What are the best ways to style the halo haircut?
The cut should be doing most of the hard work for you, but choosing the right products for your hair texture will ensure your halo cut looks its best. “Depending on your hair type or texture, you want to invest in products that are lightweight but create hold,” says Leah. “You want the condition of your hair to be well hydrated and nourished to allow your natural texture to do the work. Aim for light and fluffy voluminous curls or coils. If you prefer your coils more defined, invest in a coil defining gel like the Aveda Nutriplenish Curl Gelee. If your hair is straight, you want to add the maximum texture with the Volumizing Tonic to encourage volume whilst still keeping the style soft,” she says.
