Minimalism may have had the upper hand for the past few years, but for 2023, we're upping the ante and ushering in maximalism. Case in point: hair accessories are making a major return thanks to Gossip Girl's renewed popularity (#blairwaldorf has over 3.5 billion views on TikTok) and the preppy-girl trend taking off. And both count hair accessories as a signature staple of their aesthetic.

But the trend just got the seal of approval on the SAG awards' red carpet, where Blonde star Ana de Armas wrapped her back-to-brunette strands in a plush black velvet ribbon, and White Lotus actress, Haley Lu Richardson, pimped out her spiky bun with a crystal covered scrunchie.

Sharing a behind-the-scenes from the evening, Ana's hair stylist, Jenny Cho, captioned a picture of the actress wearing a black bow in her hair, writing “Loved creating this dreamy moment.” Rather than a straight-forward ponytail, Jenny mixed things up by creating a messy high bun with the ends left loose to form a ponytail (like a modern day spin Belle from Beauty & The Beast). To keep it looking glossy she raked some of the Sisley Hair Rituel Precious Hair Care Oil through the ends.

As for Haley who plays impressionable personal assistant, Portia, in season 2 of White Lotus, she teamed up with LA hair stylist, Laura Polko, on a sleek ‘90s spiky bun, bedazzled with a crystal Scunci scrunchie to match the rocks that she’d got studded down her ears. Paired with a pearl covered Carolina Herrera gown, we're pretty sure that “shy and retiring” was not the look Haley was going for (and we're very much here for the maximalism).

Laura used the Aquage defining gel and transforming paste to lock the style in place and Haley's makeup artist, Jenna Kristina, called on a £15 Maybelline lipstick to finish the look off.

But this is just the start of the return of the hair accessory. In our 2023 beauty trend predictions, celebrity hair stylist, Alicia Dotson told GLAMOUR, “I think we will be seeing lots of accessories, think chunky headbands and claw-clip hairstyles.” And Brenda Lee Intignano, trend expert at Cliphair, agrees. “As seen on fashionistas like Gigi Hadid, and Keke Palmer, the secret to the preppy look a la Blair Waldorf is accessories. Hair bows tying up softly curled ponytails, ribbon headbands paired with long, sleek hair hanging down, and pearl-encrusted hair clips placed perfectly yet effortlessly on the side are just a few of the perfect ways to easily prep up a day-to-day look,” she said.

And alongside looking pretty, hair accessories are practical. “If your hair is a bit greasy or if you need to switch up a look from day to night, pull it back and add an accessory," Babyliss ambassador, Syd Hayes, told us. "It is so easy and looks seriously chic.”
