If there’s one takeaway from the autumn/winter’24 runways, it’s this: We will all be experimenting with hair accessories come September. Spotted in New York, Paris, London and Milan, hair – whether it was loose and flowing or slicked-back and tied up – was dressed up with plenty of accessories.
On the more ‘OTT’ end of the scale, we saw knotted ballerina buns embellished with pink pearl pins at Alice + Olivia. At Christian Siriano, polished buns were also the order of the day – but here, they featured flecks of gold leaf on top of the bun and along the parting to mimic the use of metallics within the collection. Keeping it simple and practical, hairstylist Lacy Redway weaved a classic no. 2 pencil into the model’s chignons at Laquan Smith.
Perhaps a little too extra for the everyday woman, at Collina Strada wet-look hair was adorned with hair tattoos (aka the brand’s emblematic star and wings) using extensions. To dial this down for everyday wear, why not experiment with temporary hair colour or hair chalks to create contrast.
On the more wearable end of the hair accessories spectrum, hair bows appear to be sticking around for autumn. At Simone Rocha, black and cream bows cascaded down the models’ hair. While this particular look is more ‘high fashion’ than high street, it can easily be pared back. Take your cue from Coach, where colourful plastic bow clips made a pretty statement.
Headbands also proved to be popular. At Connor Ives and SVRC, stretchy black headbands dressed up the model’s hair without stealing the show. Popular among the celebrity circuit too, Jennifer Lawrence, Zendaya and Anya Taylor-Joy have all recently sported a preppy black band. Ideal for second or third-day hair, this affordable accessory is the perfect way to disguise greasy roots fast.
Another chic accessory that can easily hide greasy or grown-out roots? Headscarves, obvs! A nod to the ‘60s, patterned silk scarves were wrapped around the head and secured under the chin at Anna Sui. Elsewhere at Sandy Liang, black or white fabric featuring ruffled edges were secured on top the models’ hair. Simple yet chic.
