Hailey Bieber has swapped her signature waist-skimming brunette hair for a sleek, blunt bob that grazes her shoulders. Unsurprisingly, given the furore it's creating on social media today, this cut is already shaping up to be the most requested hairstyle of 2023.

Hailey Bieber chose to debut her new hairstyle, which she wore in a middle parting to show off the textured ends, on TikTok. In the clip, the model pairs the look with a casual University of Miami leather bomber jacket, black sweats and blue trainers. "Oops 🔪👩🏼‍🍳💇🏼‍♀️," read the clip's jokey caption.

This isn't the first time that Hailey has sported a bob. Back in 2020, she opted for a shorter, bright blonde manifestation of the hairstyle. But for the past few years she's kept her hair length on the long side, choosing to switch up her hair colour instead, most memorably from ash blonde to what her colourist Matt Rez calls “mid-lit bronde” and more recently deep brunette

In fact, only a few weeks ago she confessed in an Instagram story that her hair had only just reached the length where she could wear a ponytail without using clip-ins or extensions. "It's taken me 3 years to grow my hair out [...] Officially can do a ponytail with no extensions or clip ins," she wrote. And yet, even celebrities it seems are not immune to scratching the ‘new year, new haircut’ itch.

As if to further prove the versatility of the look, Hailey was then spotted with a decidedly more preppy version of her new blunt bob, for which “Margot Tenenbaum” was seemingly the muse.

According to hairstylist Syd Hayes, if you want to recreate Hailey's look, “ask your hairdresser for a box bob – short and sharp but super flattering.” For him, what makes this cut cool are the angles and the fact that there is still some skin on show on the neck. “The classic, sharp shape is less about layers and more about straight lines and angles. It really is a ‘power haircut’. The blunt cut makes hair look fuller and thicker, which is exactly what you want for a shorter haircut. It's great for accentuating your bone structure, too, thanks to the lack of graduation and layers throughout.”

Generally-speaking, when it comes to a box bob you don't want the hair to sit flat. “I love how Hailey has styled it with a bit of a grungy texture,” Syd says, referring to how Hailey's hair looked in her initial big reveal. Using a straightener to seal the cuticle and texture spray is an easy way to segue the Indie sleeze trend into a bob and make it more edgy.

Even with a sleeker iteration of a blunt bob, you still need to add some grit and volume to the roots, says Syd. “I'd recommend using Sam McKnight Cool Girl Super Lift Volumising Spray to prep the hair, blowdrying it in for full effect,” he says. “Then create added lift and volume using the BaByliss Hydro Fusion Brush, focusing on the crown of the head for lift as the two lengths of bristles pick up the hair and smooth it.”
