Those who have used the internet or any form of social media this morning will know that the Golden Globes took place last night - the first glittering ceremony to kick off awards season in earnest.

And along with the awards and the gushing speeches (we refer to George Clooney's understandably gushing tribute to Amal Clooney) come the red carpet gowns. While we at GLAMOUR prefer not to dissect the good from the bad, there were some obvious trends.

The colour of choice was white, a shade that suits everyone and looks great with a tan. Rosamund Pike wore a plunging Vera Wang style, Chrissie Teigen went for a lace nude dress, Diane Kruger looked characteristically perfect in her metallic Emilia Wickstead gown and Jamie Dornan's wife, Amelia Warner, decided on an ivory style with pink feather detailing.

Emily Blunt, Tina Fey, Reese Witherspoon and Salma Hayek also adopted it as their chosen hue, all in varying lengths and styles. Sienna Miller's plunging, boho Miu Miu option was in off-white, while Keira Knightley's custom-made, empire-line Chanel dress (her first red carpet appearance since announcing her pregnancy) also came in white with a delicate lace collar.

There was also plenty of Grecian - Amal Clooney fused old school Hollywood glamour with one-shoulder draping by Dior Haute Couture. A special mention needs to go to her chic white gloves, which were apparently her own (because we all have a pair of those knocking about the wardrobe). Moving on, Amal appreciation now over, Grecian was a shape also echoed by Emily Blunt in Michael Kors, Amy Adams in Versace and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Narciso Rodriguez.

Metallics were also big and added a pleasing dosage of sparkle to the proceedings. Julianne Moore shimmered in silver Givenchy Couture, Diane Kruger's sparkles were more demure but no less beautiful, Jennifer Aniston's sequins were black and by Saint Laurent and Reese Witherspoon glittered in custom Calvin Klein Collection.
