The Golden Globes is kickstarting award season for 2023 by making its grand comeback on Tuesday, 10th January. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association played it safe with their 2023 nominations, coming off of a scandal-ridden few years by highlighting a number of incoming Oscar contenders — while still reaffirming the infamously star-loving Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which can’t help but rubber-stamp an A-lister every once in a while.
The best-picture lineups for both comedy and drama — comprising ten films in total — are entirely made up of films with a legitimate shot at equivalent Oscar recognition from front-runners, including comedies Everything Everywhere All at Once and The Banshees of Inisherin (leading all films with eight nominations) and dramas The Fabelmans and Top Gun: Maverick, to late-breaking contenders on the bubble that could use a lift, like Damien Chazelle’s Babylon and James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water. The former Old Hollywood epic also contends for three acting awards, including Brad Pitt in a competitive supporting actor category, while Avatar’s visionary found his place among the directing lineup of five.

But the Globe nominations, which were voted on by a newly expanded membership this year, were dominated by Banshees, Everything Everywhere, and Fabelmans, all of which are recognised in directing, screenplay, and acting categories. The comedy best-picture race is rounded out by Triangle of Sadness, whose supporting-actress hopeful Dolly de Leon was also recognised, and Netflix’s biggest contender, Glass Onion, which couldn’t get its own acting play, Janelle Monáe, into that same field. Over in drama, voters expectedly fell head-over-heels for Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, recognising it not just in picture but director (and, of course, actor, for Austin Butler), and also kept the good vibes going for Todd Field’s Tár.
Notably, out of the top drama lineup were Women Talking and The Woman King — indeed, the Golden Globes did not nominate any female directors or best pictures directed by women. (The former’s Sarah Polley is recognised in screenplay, though, and the latter’s Viola Davis made the drama best-actress cut.) As far as controversy goes, though, that may be as juicy as this year’s Globes get.
