If a reverse ponytail or a graphic micro-fringe spring to mind when you think of Florence Pugh's previous red carpet looks, you have passed with flying colours. For this year's Oscars, however, her hair paid homage to pop legend Madonna in her early '90s era, according to celebrity hairstylist Adir Abergel – who created the look.
Despite wearing a gown featuring delicate beading, reminiscent of water droplets, the Oppenheimer actress steered her hair look away from wet-look predictability at the ceremony on 10 March. She also took a red carpet mainstay – the bombshell blowout (think Gigi Hadid at Cannes) – and flipped it on its head to create what Adir calls “a carefree, lived-in, glamorous vibe”.
To create Florence's ‘Madonna bob’ with its deep side part and voluminous blow-dry, Adir prepped her platinum strands with Virtue Labs' Volumising Mousse, before sectioning the hair and blow-drying it with a small round brush. He then used a curling iron to create soft, piece-y waves that mirrored the scalloped silhouette of Florence's gown.
After clipping the curls and allowing them to cool, he misted her hair with Virtue's Texturizing Spray, concentrating it at the roots for added lift. For the finishing touch, he worked a little Virtue Healing Oil through her strands for a glamorous, high-shine finish and teased the ends.

It's not the first time that Adir has leant into '90s vibes for his celebrity clients in recent weeks. At the 30th Annual SAG Awards on 24 February, he told GLAMOUR that he wanted to bring out a supermodel vibe with a lot of hair and movement for Anne Hathaway.
Her hairstylist, Adir Abergel, spills the behind-the-scenes tea.

And for Florence's second act – the Vanity Fair Oscars party – Adir took her look from day to night by pulling her textured Madonna bob into an up-do, leaving a loose tendril to cover one eye and a mussed up finish on the crown.

Meanwhile, Florence Pugh's long-time makeup artist Alex Babsky pulled the look together with plum accents on the eyes and a nude lip – for a red carpet appearance that somehow managed to be simultaneously grungy, cool, softly pretty and iconic in equal measures. Nailed it.
