No, this isn't another article declaring that florals for autumn is any more 'groundbreaking' than they are for spring (wonder if we'll ever stop thinking of Miranda Priestly whenever we catch ever a sniff of foliage?).

No, by now, we get it. Florals work for every season, every weather. But while we've been wearing - and talking about - florals for as many seasons as we can remember, for autumn/winter 2019 the trend is a little bolder, and trickier, than we've become accustomed to.

As was showcased at fashion week back in February by the likes of Erdem, Richard Quinn and Marc Jacobs, this season sees florals become entirely unapologetic; bolder, braver and busier than ever.

But if you're yet to be tempted by the floral face mask or the embroidered boot, there are ways to embark on the autumnal OTT floral. Here are five ways I'm tackling this season's boldest print trend...

1. Weekend with friends

A weekend with close friends is the perfect time to experiment with your look judgement-free. Juxtapose intensely-printed dresses in traditionally feminine shades of pink with heavy footwear, i.e. bulky boots or dad trainers.

2. In the office

A full-floral look may feel like too much of a statement in certain offices, so opt instead for a blouse that packs a punch - ideally in autumnal browns and oranges - and tuck it into a pair of trousers or a skirt that draws from a similar palette.

3. On a dinner date

For dinner during the winter months it's a good idea to stick to a deeper base hue, while playing with colour over the top. Smaller florals will feel subtler - and therefore less intimidating - if it's a first date, but keep it bold and on trend with vibrant shades such as these limes and pinks.

4. Lunch with family

If heavy, punchy florals feel a tad #extra for lunch with your elderly relatives, it's wise to keep the print on your bottom half - that way it won't be glaring at your great aunt over the roast potatoes. Pair a busy skirt with a cosy knit and flat boots to soften the whole look.

5. For a wedding

While a black dress may be almost as big a 'no no' for a wedding guest as a white one, one emblazoned with bright floral motifs is entirely acceptable. The deep base hue will render it autumn/winter appropriate, while the bold print lightens and lifts it. Pair it with simple, tonally complimentary heels.
