With a stellar cast, an adventurous plot and the promise of a hell of a lot of fun, we can't wait for queer comedy Drive-Away Dolls to hit screens.

It was made by one half of the legendary directorial duo the Coen brothers, Ethan Coen, alongside his wife Tricia Cooke, and is partially based on Cooke's queer youth in New York City and the lesbian bars, sexual experiences and friendships that developed there. We spend a lot of time in these communities in Drive-Away Dolls, with protagonist Jamie steering the other women into the scene as she deals with her break up.

The duo tried to make this film as long ago as the ‘90s – opting to name the project Drive-Away Dykes – but found it difficult to find the budget to make it as it wasn’t considered to be “serious” or “important” enough.

Thirty years later and here the movie is! Here's everything we know about it so far.

What is Drive-Away Dolls about?

We're getting slight Super Bad vibes, but with a female-fronted humour and story. The film's plot synopsis reads: “This comedy caper follows Jamie, an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian who desperately needs to loosen up.

"In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way.”

Drive-Away Dolls cast

Joining Margaret Qualley as Jamie and Beanie Feldstein (as Jamie's ex-girlfriend Sukie) is Geraldine Viswanathan as Marian, as well as some astronomical names such as Colman Domingo (who will play one of the criminals the road trippers come across), Pedro Pascal and Matt Damon.

Miley Cyrus is also rumoured to have a cameo, and we are buzzing for it. According to the trailer, she appears in some kind of psychedelic video – incredible.

What has been said about Drive-Away Dolls so far?

In an interview with Mashable, Cooked opened up about how she wanted the film to be perceived. "We wanted it to be kind of playful and sexual," she explained, also having drawn on the film being perceived as trashy and juvenile – and how she's OK with that. Coen added that Drive-Away Dolls doesn't need to be perfect, and may seem “messy and sloppy”.

They're both totally OK with the film being defined as “trashy” as well, with Coen saying it has a place alongside the more serious and important movie titles we see, especially during awards season. "Maybe [trashy movies] don't get a fair shake from critics because maybe there's some premium on importance," he says.
