British series Downton Abbey dominated the 2011 Primetime Emmys Awards, hosted by Glee's Jane Lynch, at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles last night. The ITV period drama scooped a number of awards in the miniseries and movie categories, including Outstanding Direction for a Miniseries or Movie, while creator Julian Fellowes won for Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special. Although Maggie Smith wasn't on hand to collect her award, she bagged the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie, while the series also took home the prestigious Outstanding Miniseries or Movie prize.
The night's other winners included fellow British actress, Kate Winslet, who scooped the Best Actress Emmy for her role in HBO hit Mildred Pierce, while co-star Guy Pierce was honoured in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie category. American series Modern Family also cleaned up at the awards night, while the red carpet played host to a number of stars, including Creative Arts Emmy award winner, Gwyneth Paltrow.
