In 2023, we are determined to put self-care first – by listening to a podcast, going to a yoga class, or by following TikTok’s latest trend of ‘day dumping’.
Before you ask: no, this is not an anti-Valentines Day trend aimed at savagely breaking up with your partner in the cold light of day. Instead, it's about finding the joy in the little things in life. And boy, could we all do with a little more of that right now.
Using TikTok’s carousel feature, people have been flooding their feeds with images or videos that showcase aspects of their days that ‘spark joy’. At its core, this trend is to show the hidden tranquillity and beauty within our everyday lives. This could be a building that looks really pretty, a photo of you and your friends/family, a picture of the sunset – you get the gist.
For this trend we’re taking a page out of 2014’s book, and we’re taking photos of our breakfast again. But this time, instead of whacking an over-saturated filter over it, we’re leaving it untouched. There is one rule about this trend: no glamorisation - and we are here for that.
Carefully curated messiness.

An easy way to start day dumping is by filming a small clip of your skincare or makeup routine, and this should be easy because, don’t lie, we all pretend to be a beauty guru when we do our makeup. Or perhaps take a pic of a bookcase, or even making your bed. The joy of this trend is that these once mundane tasks now appear soothing, and can encourage other people who are perhaps struggling, to want to do them.

@hanahohn also has some inspirational videos on her TikTok page. Hana really lives up to the “influencer” title as she has managed to influence several of her followers to buy some of the items we see in her videos; ‘I just ordered the bag because of you’ (@rebeka_sun) and ‘Yay for another vlog and you influenced me again for that laptop sleeve’ (@sammii601).
We encourage you to try dumping you day tonight.
