For the past few years, Meg Ryan Fall has defined the fashion of the autumnal season. As the leaves turn orange and the air get a little chillier, many of us can‘t help but look to the cosy rom-coms of the 90s for some Nora Ephron-coded inspiration.
Meg Ryan and Sandra Bullock never let us down. In the most iconic 90s rom-coms – When Harry Met Sally, You‘ve Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, While You Were Sleeping, Practical Magic — we are treated to some of the finest autumn outfits to ever grace the screen. The slouchy blazers! The wool trousers! The cosy knits! And, of course, the hats!
But while there’s nothing like strutting down a leaf-covered street in your finest Meg Ryan Fall blazer, the look doesn’t exactly see us through all of those days spent working from home and those cosy movie nights in front of the TV.
While Meg Ryan Fall doesn‘t traditionally refer to loungewear, I think that needs to change. Looking back through the rom-coms of the 90s, these heroines aren‘t only well-dressed on their autumnal strolls in Central Park — they also know exactly how to nail the cosy hibernation look, too.
Meg Ryan in Sleepless in Seattle
The look that started it all. Iconic, perfectly simple, timeless and infinitely cosy, this is the ultimate cosy girl vibe — a matching grey sweatshirt and joggers with super thick matching ribbed socks pulled up over the bottom of the sweatpants for maximum comfort. I think about this look way too often — and you’re welcome, now you will, too.
Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock in Practical Magic
It doesn’t get more 90s than this — a masculine flannel shirt, sweatpants and a low messy bun. Witchy sister or bestie optional but definitely recommended.
Cameron Diaz in The Holiday
We're sneaking forwards out of the 90s into the early 2000s for the this one, but it's so worth it. Look at the layers of cashmere. So cosy! Here, Cameron Diaz gives us an important reminder that hats and scarves are perfectly acceptable indoors — especially when paired with a full bottle of red wine and, hopefully, Jude Law.
Sandra Bullock in While You Were Sleeping
The clue's in the name of the film — every single one of Sandra Bullock's slouchy, oversized outfits look cosy enough to sleep in, and I am obsessed. I highly recommend you watch this film in full with a notepad in hand because there are dozens of cosy looks to take inspiration from here. My favourites typically consist of a giant wool jumper paired with joggers and giant socks.
Lindsay Lohan (and Lindsay Lohan) in The Parent Trap
It may have been summer camp, but Annie and Hallie certainly knew how to bundle up in the branded comfy camp clothing. Those cute matching jogger sets were to die for. Plus, Hallie nailed it with the adorable Alice band as an accessory.
Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail
Here, Meg Ryan is demonstrating the absolutely perfect outfit for emailing your internet boyfriend — a giant zip up hoodie, sweats, socks and a fitted white vest. In fact, this is also the ideal set up for WFH — make sure you tuck yourself under the covers and bring your laptop right into bed with you.
Billy Crystal in When Harry Met Sally
X content
An honorary rom-com girl, I bring you, Billy Crystal. I just had to include this look from When Harry Met Sally. The cable knit white jumper, the grey joggers, the thick wool socks, the guilty pleasure Stephen King book, the cosy curled up position in the chair — it's quite simply immaculate vibes all around, and I will be channeling them all autumn long.
