Lagos, Portugal
Portugal was once hailed as one of the best affordable travel destinations in Europe for its mix of beaches, culture and cuisine, but prices have been on the rise in recent years. While places like Lisbon, Porto and more popular destinations in the Algarve may not be the cheapest of holiday spots anymore, you can find a hidden Portuguese gem in Lagos, on the Western Algarve. Think: postcard-pretty beaches, a rich history and buzzing nightlife, with plenty of bars and restaurants to be found along the marina.
Izmir, Turkey
The pound's strength against the Turklish lira has risen by 23%, meaning an extra £189 of cash per £1000, according to travel money company Eurochange. Avoid the tourist traps and head to hidden gem Izmir, nestled at the top of Turkey's Turquoise Coast (the name alone is enough to make us pack our bags). Izmir itself is full of culture and history (and beaches, of course), and is often referred to as a calmer alternative to Istanbul. Don't miss the Kemeraltı Bazaar where you'll find shops and cafes as well as historical buildings.
Fez, Morocco
Like the rest of Morocco, Fez is very affordable and quieter than Marrakech, though you can still expect a bustling medina – the largest urban pedestrian zone in the world. In fact, Fez is a wonderfully ancient city, dating back to the 8th century. Get lost in its winding alleyways, snap up some Moroccan home decor from the stalls (which you'd likely pay a small fortune for here), and enjoy the food at local markets.
Galle, Sri Lanka
If you're looking for a far-flung affordable destination outside of Europe, look no further than Sri Lanka. Sure, the flights aren't exactly cheap, but once you're there, it's incredibly easy to holiday in Sri Lanka on a budget. There's a reason it's a backpackers' haven: food, transport and accommodation are all relatively cheap; the one thing that may set you back is activities like safaris, which cost around £40. But travelling around this beautiful country by train is cheap, with breathtaking views from Kandy to Ella, or spend your time lazing on the beaches of Galle or Unawatuna.
Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam
For other affordable long-haul holidays, Southeast Asia is another great option, and Vietnam is a favourite amongst budget-conscious travellers for its incredibly cheap (and delicious) street food and accommodation. Don't miss the museums of Ho Chi Minh, including the War Remnants Museum and the Fine Arts Museum.
Sofia, Bulgaria
Bulgaria is often overlooked as a European holiday destination, but here you'll find a buzzing atmosphere (with the nightlife to match), galleries, museums and churches to explore, and a wealth of cheap hostels and hotels to pitch up in. One of the best things to do in Sofia is simply wander its streets, snapping photos of the street art, sipping a beer of coffee in one of its many cafes watching the world go by, and taking in its vibrant, fun atmosphere (for free!)
Paros, Greece
Dying to head to Santorini in 2023, but feeling intimidated by the heaving crowds (and the ever-increasing costs to match?) Head to its lesser-known Cycladic cousin, Paros – where many Greek families holiday themselves – and just a couple of hours from Santorini by ferry. The white-washed buildings with traditional blue windows and rooftops, the bright blue sea (with sandy beaches to match), and the restaurants and tavernas dishing up delicious Mediterranean food. Need we say more?
Brașov, Romania
Romania is often hailed as one of the cheapest countries to visit in Europe, and Brașov – in the Transylvania region of the country – deserves a place on your bucket list for 2023. Spend time wandering through the medieval city's laidback, romantic cobbled streets, tour the Biserica Neagra (black church) and hike up Tampa Mountain for breathtaking views of the city.
Prague, Czech Republic
It's not exactly a secret that the Czech Republic makes an excellent budget European holiday, but there's a reason why budget-friendly travellers flock to the country's capital, Prague, all year round: transport, food and alcohol is very affordable. Book for a winter getaway for even cheaper accommodation options and explore the Christmas markets, said to be some of the best in Europe.
Cancun, Mexico
If you're looking for a sun-drenched getaway in the Americas without breaking the bank, Cancun is the trip for you. Sure, flights might set you back a pretty penny, but when you're out there, you'll feel like you're on the exotic getaway of a lifetime without thinking twice before spending a couple of quid on tasty, authentic street food (tacos, anyone?) Check out Airbnb or hostels for cheap accommodation.
