Jennifer Lawrence is set to add to her catalogue of critical acting acclaim with her new film Causeway, which, trust us, you do not want to miss it.

Nearly a year after appearing in the satirical black comedy flick, Don't Look Up alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, the Oscar-winning actress takes a serious turn in the new psychological drama, which highlights the topic of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The 32-year-old actress plays Lynsey, a member of the US Army Corps of Engineers, who struggles with her traumatic injuries sustained from a vehicular explosion upon her return to New Orleans.

As the feature-length directorial debut of Lila Neugebauer, who has helmed several off-Broadway plays and episodes of television shows such as Maid and The Sex Lives of College Girls, we're sure to be in for an insightful watch with Causeway - especially that Hollywood star Jennifer is now at the stage of her career where she can pick and choose the projects she feels passionate about.

So, read ahead to find out more about the new movie Causeway, such as cast, release date, trailers, interviews and more.

What is the plot of Causeway?

With many PTSD movies previously centred on the emotional complexities of post-war living, Causeway differentiates itself by focusing on the physical struggles, as Jennifer's character Lynsey, a returning US soldier, has trouble adjusting to life back at home after sustaining a traumatic brain injury while serving in Afghanistan.

An official plot synopsis, as per Collider, reads: "Causeway is an intimate portrait of a soldier struggling to adjust to her life after returning home to New Orleans."

What are critics saying about Causeway?

Following its world premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 10 and its European premiere at the 2022 (BFI) London Film Festival on October 8, critics are mostly giving Causeway a thumbs up!

"Causeway is a touching story of friendship and confronting trauma elevated by a believably broken Jennifer Lawrence and a similarly pained, ultra-naturalistic turn from Brian Tyree Henry," Flickering Myth reviews. Empire writes: "Causeway's biggest appeal is seeing Jennifer Lawrence and Brian Tyree Henry act up a quiet, powerful storm."

Entertainment Weekly adds: "It's nice to see actors like these do such subtle, sympathetic work for a gifted young director — and to find an outlet for storytelling that doesn't demand neat redemption, but still allows for grace."

What has Jennifer Lawrence said about Causeway?

Stating that she liked a "fast-paced Marvel movie as much as the next person", Jennifer admitted to Vogue that she does "miss the slow melody of a character-driven story" - hence why she was drawn to the role.

However, production for the movie was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting the screen star to reevaluate how she would approach the sensitive nature of the role. "Her untenable home, her inability to commit to one thing or another because of these internal injuries that are completely invisible but huge - I think I connected with that at that specific time in my life. So much was going on with me at that time that I didn't realise. Until I was back, pregnant, married, making it. And I was just like, Oh, this is a woman who is scared to commit."

Brian also elaborated on how he approached James' relationship with Lynsey, telling the publication: "I'm always really conscious of what the relationships look like when you have a Black man and a white woman in this society. There's something about when somebody sees another person for who they truly are because of what they've lost. And you lean into that. And you're like, Oh, well, I've lost too. Are we going to continue losing together? Are we going to build each other up?"

When will Causeway be released?

Causeway is set for release on November 4 on Apple TV+.
