Not since the 2012 Oscars, when Gwyneth Paltrow wore that printed-on-our-brain-forever pristine Tom Ford ensemble, have we wanted to own a cape more.

But at last night's Golden Globes, two of our favourite red-carpet looks came complete with matching cape, suggesting that the shoulder-covering garment favoured by superheroes far and wide is enjoying something of a resurgence.

First up, Amy Adams took some of the attention away from the plunging neckline of her two-tone Valentino gown with the addition of a claret and tomato red cape. It's bold but it doesn't take any shine away from the dress itself. Cape etiquette at its finest.

12 Years A Slave actress Lupita Nyong'o also cut an incredible figure on the red carpet in a vibrant Ralph Lauren gown, complete with its very own outerwear. The elegant strapless gown was complemented perfectly by the built-in cape, reminding us that capes can add more than a touch of elegance to an already demure dress.
