Set on the luxurious French Riviera, the Cannes Film Festival is perhaps the chicest event on the movie calendar, and likewise, the Cannes beauty looks are known for their unadulterated glamour.
The prestigious annual occasion is a celebration of the art of film-making and an opportunity to showcase the best films, whilst also previewing new releases. The festival has helped to launch the careers of top actors, directors and producers, so it's a big deal, and the event's top prize, the Palme D'Or, is one of the most sought after awards in the industry.
Nestled on the glittering Cote D'Azur with it's slick motor yachts, palatial hotels and exquisite food, the festival, which lasts for two weeks every May, is also an excuse to pick out the dreamiest beauty trends heading into summer. And while the glam at Cannes tends to lean toward more timeless classics, we've also seen some beautifully executed avant-garde and experimental beauty moments.
Here are some of our favourite Cannes beauty moments from 2023…
Jelly lipgloss
Not a matte lip girl? No worries, we've been seeing plenty of ultra glossy, jelly lip looks in fruity shades of coral, tangerine, berry and peach. It's fun and fresh for summer but it can look surprisingly delicate and elegant, as Jennifer Lawrence showed on the red carpet.
Bare lids and bold lips
We don't believe in beauty rules, but the whole “lips or eyes” spiel makes a lot more sense when pushed to the extreme like Iris Law. The model opted for totally bare eyelids and a subtle coat of mascara before going big on a scene-stealing statement dark red lip.
Sea-mist hair
Wet-look hair may not be new, but it's a vibe heading into summer. Laura Harrier's sleek, flicked bob, looked lightly misted by a sea breeze, which is very fitting for Cannes' coastal location, but would look just as incredible for summer in the city.
Muted monochrome
Monochrome beauty looks have been trending for the past few seasons with uniform and co-ordinating shades across eyes, lips and cheeks. Gigi Hadid skipped traditionally summer tones in favour of a cool-toned '90s brown monochrome makeup moment for her appearance at Cannes this year.
Softly smoked eyes
Smoky eyes can feel a little heavy in the summer, but not the sheer, gauzy smoky eye served up by Blackpink's Rosé. All the drama is focused along the top lash line before diffusing out into the softest, wispiest, barely-there vapour.
Tie-dye hair colour
Proof that even fancy occasions should never be taken too seriously, we love Helen Mirren's tie-dye blue updo which is giving modern rebel Marie Antoinette. We love the mermaid shade which taps into one of summer's biggest trends: mermaidcore.
Mermaid waves
Speaking of mermaidcore, one of the trends most signature moves is mermaid waves and Naomi Campbell was on hand to show us how it's done with XXL butt-grazing crimped waves that Ariel would 100% approve.
Jumbo liner
If you love a winged liner look, take it up a notch like Ashlee Simpson who chose a chunky black cat-eye liner to complement her all-black gown for Cannes.
Lived-in hair
Lily-Rose Depp may have kept things elegant in a little black Chanel tweed mini dress, but her slept-in hair and smudgy kohl liner kept things cool, relaxed and seriously wearable. Plus, we love that she's played into her natural texture.
XXL fringe
Don't think a fringe is for summer? Dua Lipa brought the drama with an XXL cheek-sweeping gappy fringe that fell halfway between an outgrown wispy fringe and a curtain fringe. It created a flirty peekaboo moment for the sultry smoky silver shadow she wore on her eyes underneath.
