If you prefer the classics when it comes to beauty, but love a fresh twist, “Beurre Brunette” could be the hair shade for you.

Coined by hair super-forecaster, Tom Smith, who also gave us Cowgirl Copper and Expensive Brunette, the colour offers a pretty update to brunette hair.

What is “Beurre Brunette” hair colour?

The name comes from the French “Beurre” meaning butter and in practice, it translates to a beautiful buttery brunette that's warm (but not brassy), fresh and deliciously multi-tonal, while still maintaining a beautiful timeless feel to it.

“Buttery tones of blonde are nothing new, with warmer golden tones taking the lead from the previously favoured icy blondes. But in the case of brunettes this “Beurre Brunette” (brown butter) shade is a great choice for softening any potential for harshness when wearing darker bases and for those with naturally darker hair who are tempted to try a lighter shade without a dramatic change,” says Tom. "Under the ‘Expensive Brunette’ umbrella of luxurious, multi-tonal dimension, this shade is a great way of upgrading your brown hair for winter or utilising any leftover lightness from summer," he adds.

Who does “Beurre Brunette” work best for?

It's best suited to those with a naturally dark base and it blends beautifully with greys, too. “This can be a great way for those who have been mostly dark-haired previously but are starting to see natural grey hairs making their way in,” says Tom. He explains that “adding lightness and dimension into the hair” won't “cover the greys” but can “work in harmony with changing hair colours,” such as greys.

What to request in the salon?

“Ideal on darker to mid brown bases, buttery golden ribbons should be woven into the hair in fine pieces which are lightest around the side of the face and disappear as they get closer to the root," says Tom.
