2015 saw an array of new vocab in the beauty world. Many of the new words can be attributed to the rise in Instagram hair and makeup trends, while others were inspired by what we saw on the catwalk. How many of these nouveau terms do you recognise?

Puns

The humble pun originates from a ponytail/bun hybrid we saw on the AW15 catwalks. Take Jonathan Saunders, par example. As they usually do, the celebs quickly followed, with Rooney Mara and Amber Heard becoming big fans. We tried out this new hair phenomenon - check out the video here.

Strobing

Move over Kardashian-style contouring, the strobe is IN. A new form of shaping the face, which concentrates on highlighting instead of shading, strobing got us all looking glowing and sheeny back in October. Still not sure of what the whole thing's about? Read our little guide here.

Lobs

If you're a little nervous to go for the chop, the lob should be your cut of choice. A lob (that's a 'long bob' to the less beauty-savvy among us) was sported by many a celeb, namely Khloe Kardashian and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Check them all out here.

Glitter roots

This Instagram-inspired trend must have been sent from outer-space… we're convinced of it. It involves painting glitter directly onto your roots for a cool party-ready look. It especially impresses when you have pretty pastel-hued hair. We gave it a whirl and despite washing glitter out of our hair for weeks, kind of loved it.

Galaxy hair

Not for the brave, Deep purples, navies, pinks, greens and oranges are dyed and ombred through different sections of the hair, replicating the swirling sci-fi colours of the galaxies (yep, really). See some pictures here.

Negative space

Sometimes, less is more, and this nail art trend totally acknowledges this. The idea is to leave a strip (in a line or a certain shape) unpainted when doing your nails to create a cool patterned effect on your tips. Our news editor Leanne Bayley gave it a try - read about her experience here.

Opal hair

The pastel cousin to galaxy hair, opal hair means not having to choose between pretty shades when coming to dye your hair. It includes dying sections of your locks in mutiple soft coloured shades.

Hair plopping

Potentially the funniest-sounding of them all, hair plopping offers curl-lovers the chance to get pretty waves sans heat. It's an easy method which involves using a cotton towel on damp hair. Read our full how-to guide here.

Huns

Messy 'dos got cool this year, mainly because of the hun - the half-up, half-down style which became stylish. The hun seems to have originated from the topknot, becoming smaller, messier and higher. Check out these huns with huns.

Shelfies

Forget the selfie, beauty shelfies are taking over our Instagram feeds. We love seeing what our favourite ladies have on their top beauty shelves, making this new trend incredibly addictive.
