Barbie is set to become the ultimate film of the year, especially if the newly released trailer is anything to by.
Excitement was at fever-pitch across social media as we were given another look at the upcoming movie directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Australian actress Margot Robbie as the titular doll and Ryan Gosling as her boyfriend Ken, along with an impressive star-studded, bumper cast. And as you imagine, viewers didn't watch the trailer sitting down. In fact, they had a whole range of hilarious and thrilled reactions to it, namely, directed to the opening shot of Barbie taking her feet out of her high heels and them still being shaped in high-heel form.

Proving just how genius the shot was, one person tweeted: "Barbie taking her shoes off and her feet staying the same," alongside a video of Jamie Lee Curtis saying in an interview, "That's real! Even though she's fictional, it's real. And that's important to me." Another added: "BARBIE'S FEET STAYING IN THE SAME SHAPE WHEN SHE STEPS OUT OF HER HEELS BC THAT'S HOW THE DOLLS ARE #Barbie." A third added: "I finally watched the #Barbie trailer today and the audible gasp and double gasp when she stepped out the shoe and her feet stayed in the shape like the dolls. I wanted to cry I think." A fourth added simply: "this is real cinema #Barbie."
Meanwhile, Margot wasn't the only one commanding attention for the role as movie star Ryan, who is said to have performed career-best work in Barbie, which was also a hot topic. "Ryan gosling in comedic role would never go wrong #barbie," one person said while another quipped: "we all agree we're letting Ryan Gosling keep the Ken accent until this Oscar win for Best Actor in 2024 #Barbie."

There was also a love of love for the colossal star-cast, who was introduced to us via some very funky posters. Say hello to the likes of Dua Lipa, Nicola Coughlan, Helen Mirren, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Rhea Pearlman, Emerald Fennell, Scott Evans, Ritu Arya, Jamie Demetriou, Hari Nef, Sharon Rooney, and Marisa Abela! Wow. But in particular, the trailer prompted a lot of fan theories and easter eggs, especially with many pointing out the movie's plentiful references to the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz.
In the trailer, Barbie is first seen wearing a pink gingham dress very similar to the blue one worn by Judy Garland for her role in the movie, while later, the Mattel doll drives down a pink road which looks a lot like the yellow brick road. She also drives past a movie theatre, which features three Wizard of Oz posters, with the marquee reading, "Now Playing: The Wizard of Oz." So what does all this likeness to the iconic movie mean? Well, many thought it marked Barbie's adventure from Barbieland into a whole new world.
"Barbie's Barbie Land theater is playing THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939), a movie about a young woman transported into another world, seems like a strong hint at the story being told in #BarbieMovie // #BarbieTheMovie," one noted. Another echoed: "Also noticed wizard of oz is playing at the theatre , I'm thinking "if i only had a heart "etc might be a theme of the movie hence going to the real world #Barbie #barbiemovie." Meanwhile, TikTok user Cat Quinn also added, “I think we're looking into an epic journey into another world. But when she gets there, she realises that this seemingly gilded place is actually pretty wicked. Will she ultimately realise that's no place like home and tap her barbie pink slippers together three times? We'll just have to wait until July to find out.”

In general, the movie will be massive upon its cinematic release on 21 July, as it simply seems to be fun, lighthearted, colourful masterpiece. “We haven't had a film with this much color and vibrance in forever 🥹 #Barbie #Barbiemovie 💗⭐️,” one person gushed. Someone else added: "#Barbie is bright and pink and girly and joyful instead of moody and blue and grey like so many movies lately." And to that, we say life in plastic it's fantastic!
