Arabian Nights meets Americana at Ashish

If you know one thing about Ashish it's that he has a way with sequins, and if you know another, it's that he's mighty fond of pop culture. Spring/Summer 14 saw the designer uniting his two passions in an eclectic spin inspired by his local off-licence (who's says fashion's predictable?).

Backstage after the show, which included everything from glittery Coca Cola shopping bags, African neckplates and zebra-striped hair, Ashish said he was aiming for an "Arabian Nights style fairytale".

"I just wanted to give it a little spin - sportswear mixed with a slightly ethnic look - it made it really fascinating. I wanted to have a magical mood... It wasn't really a theme."

The show kicked off with a man in a blinged out T-shirt, matching jeans and a sort of crown, but the thing that got the crowd laughing and cheering was a jade green bag meant to replicate the M&S plastic bag only with the letters inverted - naughty, naturally.

Although, the fizzy drink was the star brand on show today:

"I'm just always inspired by American pop culture, and Coca Cola is kind of the biggest brand. And I just love how the logo has been used so much - Andy Warhol and everyone - and it's such an iconic thing in itself," Ashish said.

A year ago, the designer's Spring/Summer 2013 collection tied together all the strands of 90s influences (dungarees, slogan T-shirts, oversized jumpers and tracky bottoms) surfing the catwalks, so was this a continuation of that theme?

"I don't even think about it," he told us. "I think it's just about things that I like or I miss or I feel. The music is what I want to hear now." Cue Amerie's One Thing, which instigated a dance-happy front row - we spied Atlanta de Cadenet and Paloma Faith feeling the beat.
