At the 21st GLAMOUR Women of the Year Awards, we're honouring those women who aren't afraid to challenge the status quo and reshape the world. From activism to acting, our winners are working across a variety of industries to make the world a better, more equal place.
And after an amazing few years of making an imprint in the music industry with her unapologetic confidence, 31-year-old singer Anne-Marie certainly made her mark as she took to the glamorous red carpet at the Outernet in London to take home her Musician of the Year Award. Looking every inch the rockstar, the hitmaker opted for a floral printed red button shirt with a suede neckline and sleeves, complete with a matching pleated mini skirt and grunge lace-up Dr. Marten flatform boots.
Talking to GLAMOUR on the red carpet, Anne-Marie revealed that she did her make-up herself and made the spur-of-the-moment decision to cut herself a fringe. We love her confidence!
And her acceptance speech was next level, too.
“F*ck, I'm good at singing in front of people, but I'm bad at speaking,” she opened her speech. "I have to say I've been nominated for my fair share, but the amount of awards I've been nominated for is incomparable to the lack of speeches I've had to do. I guess you can say I've never been a winner, unless it was karate, so don't fuck with me
“I thought about what I wanted to say to you all, but then I thought I'd say something to my younger self instead because maybe there'll be another person out there, somewhere, who might like to hear this bit of advice because I would've.”
Sharing a personal letter to her younger self, she said: "Dear little Anne-Marie, the world may be scary and makes you anxious, and at times you don't want to come outside. There will be people in life that smile while twisting a knife, there'll be days filled with joy, and days filled with tears all because you fell in love with the wrong boys. At times it seems like no one can hear, but just know that one day, you'll be here. There'll be disappointments, sleepless nights, and all-round days not knowing what to do with your life. People will come, and people will go, but stay true to yourself. Be the thorn for the rose. School will be weird, they'll call you odd, but at least one thing's clear, I ain't got a cheesy knob.
“One day you'll travel the world, and people will actually like your music, believe it or not. You'll learn that your voice that was once unheard will be heard by those who need it, just as you did. And remember that everyday you are beautiful, even though you don't feel it. When you get here, I'll be somewhere else writing you another shit letter. So take the time to breathe and be present in every moment along the journey. Stand tall, speak loud, and I promise you'll be proud.”
Yes, kween.
On the red carpet, the star added that her look for the evening was inspired by the "vibe of her third album", which was "more out there" and "rocky". She defiantly stated: "I'm not scared anymore".
Anne-Marie also spoke candidly about the women who inspire her, admitting that other than the women in her family, and Judge Judy, she was "inspired by every women, no matter what they're doing". She added: "If they're fighting for something, they inspire me."
Detailing the moments that make her feel the most empowered, the FRIENDS singer said it is when she "makes a decision based on what I want". Giving further context, Anne-Marie said the most significant difficulty she had to overcome to get to where she is today is "not to be swayed by other people's views on who they think you should be" and "staying true to yourself". Preach!
