Anne Hathaway is dipping her toes into the wrong-shoe theory, and the results are oh, so right.
This past week, the 43-year-old actor found the perfect pairing for summer’s hero piece, the humble slip dress. While her particular version of the look is not quite as basic as the title typically implies— Hathaway's version of the closet staple comes in a rich brown silk with a deconstructed sheer panel that’s toughened up by some unexpected cargo pockets — it remains a largely blank canvas that can be dressed up or down with the right footwear. And boy, did Hathaway pick the perfect shoes for a chic summer day in New York City.
It turns out, every slip dress needs to be paired with high-contrast fashion trainers. In this case, Hathaway opted for slim pair of Adidas Tokyo trainers in a bold zebra print, giving the sophisticated dress a sporty twist that aligns with multiple current trends.
Of course, I can’t help but think of Dakota Johnson’s floaty yellow Dôen dress and black trainer combo that went viral while she was filming Materialists in 2024. For a moment, Johnson made florals for spring actually feel groundbreaking. Now, Anne Hathaway has inverted the formula and proven a dark monochrome dress and printed trainer work together just as effectively, though she made some adjustments that feel very specific to summer 2026.
Animal-print trainer are certainly having a moment among street style stars, while it seems like sporty fashion trainers are only getting slimmer and sleeker by the day. Between Hathaway’s Tokyo trainers (which have been cosigned by Jennifer Lawrence) and Meghan Markle’s white low-cut Eda d’Orsay trainers by Freda Salvador, it’s fair to say stock in no-show socks are going way up in summer 2026.
That’s right, we’re showing ankle in summer 2026, so it’s time to pair down your ever-growing crew sock collection and start carrying around bandaids for an added line of defence against blisters. By the time full sunshine hits, you're be grateful.
