Anne Hathaway explained how she accidentally recreated that Devil Wears Prada scene

At this point, she's more iconic than Andy ever was.

Andy Sachs famously steps away from the fashion world at the end of The Devil Wears Prada, but Anne Hathaway has embraced her role as a style star, and she was happy to revive the character for a night, even if it was by accident.

Talking to Savannah Guthrie on US show Today, the Oscar winner acknowledged that she'd inadvertently dressed as Sachs during New York Fashion Week last month, when she wore a brown crocodile coat, turtleneck top, and skirt, and sported bangs and a high ponytail to the Michael Kors show.

What's more, she was sitting next to Anna Wintour, the alleged inspiration for the titular devil and played to perfection by Meryl Streep in the movie. It really seemed like a deleted scene come to life.

“It was kind of nuts, wasn’t it?” Hathaway said. “It was by accident. I was supposed to wear something else — the shoes didn’t fit — this was the other outfit that came, and then my hair stylist, who was so lovely and I’d never worked with him before, just said, ‘Oh, I know what to do!’ And he threw my hair up in a ponytail. I looked in the mirror and I thought, Oh, that’s funny, I wonder if anybody will notice. They noticed!”

For reference, here is what Hathaway looked like at the Michael Kors show:

And here's what Andy Sachs wore post-makeover but also post-Runway, when she's interviewing for a more serious journalism job but has learned to respect fashion and also the art of self-presentation:

So imagine, if you will, that she reinvents herself as a high society writer who ingratiates herself into Miranda's world and ultimately becomes her friend when Miranda decides to treat her as an equal and not an underling. It might look something like…

Meanwhile, Emily (Blunt) finally gets to go to Paris and wear couture. Happy endings all around.

Next time, just for fun, maybe Anne Hathaway should dress as her character from The Princess Diaries. Or, if she's feeling brave, Rachel Getting Married.
