In his debut column for GLAMOUR, celebrity hairstylist Adir Abergel shares his ultimate weatherproof hairstyles that are perfect to try as we head into autumn.
Adir is best known for his show-stopping red carpet looks and A-list clients including Kristen Stewart and Anne Hathaway, as well as the pro behind Nicole Peltz's supermodel-inspired wedding hair, so we're pretty sure we're in safe hands…
As summer comes slowly to a close and the autumn months creep ever closer, it's hard to know how to wear your hair. After all, the weather is changing ever hour with beaming sunshine one minute, and downpours the next. If you are looking to beat unwanted frizz and start the day prepared for any conditions, then weatherproof hairstyles are your saving grace. The key is all about creating a style that doesn't cause additional damage, and will either stay in place or look even better after a few hours wear. Now go and have fun with your hair!
Wet look hair is all about conditioning your hair while creating a super chic style. After all, nothing looks better than sleek, shiny hair. While it works on every texture and length, it’s especially amazing for shoulder length hair.
While hair is still wet, apply a combination of shine cream and hair gel from root to tip and comb through while creating the style you want. Slicked back off the face is a great option, as is a centre parting tucked behind the ears.
Depending on if you want to be snatched, sporty or classic, the numerous different placements of a ponytail creates an endless number of looks. A snatched ponytail is a super slick pony and a tight hairline to give you a lifted look and accentuate cheekbones. My secret trick is spraying a tooth brush with hairspray when you finish and brushing the hair line to keep fine hair and flyaways in place.
Or, you could go for the classic ponytail, which is a great look for everyone. I like to start with the right cocktail of products. I start with Virtue Volumizing Primer at the roots and apply heat with a hair-dryer. Once dry, I add a bit of texture spray along the mid lengths and use fingers to comb the hair back and gather it with my supporting hand. I love a bungee elastic for tying a ponytail because it helps not lose the position or shape when securing. Pro tip: to minimise sagging at the nape of the neck, look up when you’re tying the ponytail.
For a chic and simple hairstyle, opt for the classic low knot. Secure your hair at the nape of your head using a bungee. Make two sections with the hair and twist them together. Wrap them around the bungee and secure it with bobby pins. To finish, I like to use Virtue Style Guard Spray Hairspray to keep everything in place. To mix up the look, try a side knot for an elegant alternative. Gather all your hair and push it towards the side you want to show off your knot on.
Faux-hawks are so fun to get your hair tied up and out of your face for summer activities. Make a half ponytail with the top of your hair and secure it using an elastic. Make three more subsections with the hair that remains and secure each one. Using a knotting technique, make knots for each ponytail making a faux mohawk look. I love leaving interesting hair pieces out and polishing them with Virtue paste.
For great box braids you want to start with clean, dry hair. Section hair into small, medium or large square partings and within each square, divide the hair into three subsections. Braid all the way to the root and continue this technique until you have covered your entire head. This style can last up to six weeks depending on your hair type and how well it is maintained. I love using Virtue Healing Oil during that time to hydrate and add shine.
Tousled beach waves are an iconic undone style. The look has passed the phase of being a trend. All hair types can wear it, but it does require work to achieve. If you have straight hair it’s all about creating the right texture and foundation. I like to start with a mouse like Virtue Volumizing Mousse and then diffuse the hair until completely dry. Then I take a one-inch curling iron, curling from mid shaft to ends, making sure to leave the ends out.
If you have curly hair, there’s a great trick to get relaxed beach waves. Begin by washing and conditioning your hair before bed and instead of towel-drying, use a few sheets of paper towel to gently squeeze and pat the hair to absorb the moisture. This will "set" waves better than air-drying alone and the paper towel absorbs more water than a cotton towel, really speeding up your drying time.
When you're done, brush through hair and apply a rich hydrating hair oil and apply Virtue Frizz Block to the bangs when they are damp before blow-drying. This new magic potion is a complete humidity blocker and it was my secret to Nicola Peltz’s smooth wedding bangs.
Next, divide your hair into two sections and braid each side. Make sure to keep the top as smooth as possible. Keep the braid somewhat loose so there is movement. When you wake up, remove the braids, and spray with a texturising spray for movement. If hair is still damp, you can use a diffuser to dry and set the spray.
