Heads up, rom-com fans! The new film People We Meet On Vacation has launched on Netflix, Jan 9th, 2026, and promises serious escapism, hit-you-in-the-feels romance and laughs, too. Here's what to expect from the plot:
Based on the novel by Emily Henry, People We Meet On Vacation focuses on best friends Poppy (Emily Bader) and Alex (Tom Blyth), who've gone on annual trips together since meeting back in college due to Poppy's high-flying career as a luxury travel reviewer. However… there's always been vibes between the two, hinting at a relationship that isn't strictly platonic. A destination wedding in sunny Barcelona promises the perfect time for the pair to reconnect — and for love to potentially strike.
As well as a great storyline, People We Meet On Vacation features some seriously stunning filming locations, ranging from Spain to New Orleans. Below is a list of the spots that the cast filmed at if the cinematography has inspired any wanderlust:
Where was People We Meet On Vacation filmed?
It might come as a surprise to viewers, but all of the scenes that are based in Squamish, Canada in the film are actually filmed in… Spain. The leafy, forested area of northeastern Spain provided the perfect backdrop for the exterior shots that gave a distinctly Canadian vibe, with pines, lakes and campsites.
“We lucked out on some beautiful tall pines that were planted by an American outside Barcelona and had this beautiful forest that looked very similar to Canada,” the film's production designer, Bruce Curtis, told Time Out.
The estate in Catalonia that they filmed on is home to 58 species of conifers that have grown there since 1860.
Poppy's stunning Tuscan villa? Yup, that's actually in Catalonia, too. “This was tough to find,’ Bruce told Time Out, ‘because we were really looking for a vista that [tells the viewer] that we are in Tuscany. I was looking for cypress trees, vineyards.” A farmhouse in the Catalonian town of Llagostera provided the perfect swap-in for Tuscany, with its mortared stone walls and open hallways.
For all of the scenes that were supposed to be Ohio, the crew filmed in the suburban neighbourhoods on the outskirts of New Orleans, which gave things a distinctly peaceful and homely vibe — and also perfectly set the scene for some of the film's more romantic moments.
The film's production designer grew up in Ohio, so was able to locate the perfect spot that would have the perfect Midwestern feel.
