We don’t blame them, between the 80s music, 80s fashion, 80s hairstyles, there is a lot to brag about…What we’re really interested in is of course, the latter. Why? Because 80s hairstyles are making an unexpected come back and we’re very here for it.

“The 1980’s will always uphold its reputation as one of the most iconic decades on record, especially when it comes to hair. From blow out bangs, shaggy cuts, perms and mullets, the 80’s hair culture is definitely making a comeback!” says Extensions and trend expert from Cliphair Brenda Lee Intignano.
“This golden age for hairstyles, most suitably characterised by ‘big and bold’ hair do’s, is seen to be creeping back into the spotlight, from being rocked at red carpet events, trending on social media networks such as Instagram and TikTok, and even out on the streets,” Brenda adds.
The 1980s was a decade marked by bold, expressive and often eccentric styles, and hairstyles were clearly no exception. From big, teased hair to permed curls, the '80s saw the emergence of some truly iconic hairdos that still inspire fashion and beauty trends to this day.
When it comes to afro and curly hair, best believe there were some pretty epic, important and influential hairstyles in the 1980s too, and the good news is that they continue to be celebrated for their cultural significance and style today.

The ponytail would then be curled, teased or accessorised with ribbons and scrunchies. Although the girlies of Hollywood may not be spotted with side ponytails left right and centre, some of our favs can’t live without a sky high sleek pony. Locs were a popular hairstyle for both men and women in the 80s, particularly among Rastafarian communities. This hairstyle involved letting the hair grow naturally into long, ropelike strands that were often styled with beads or other decorative elements. Many people opt for faux locs and butterfly locs for a modern twist to the popular style, so that in can be changed around.

Hair clips in the 80s were typically big, bold, and colourful, often featuring patterns or designs that matched the fits. Popular styles included claw clips, barrettes, and banana clips, which were all used to create a variety of hairstyles such as the half-up, half-down looks or a voluminous ponytail. The style was often accessorised with headbands or scarves, and it was popularised by African-American actresses and musicians. This of course will never go out of style.

Crimping was a popular hair trend in the 1980s. It involved using a special tool to create small, zigzag-like waves in the hair, which added texture and volume. Crimped hair was often styled with brightly coloured scrunchies and hair accessories. In 2023 we are seeing a bit of a comeback for this style. We take the tight mermaid waves as well, which favour crimped hair with a modern spin to it.
