What advice would you give for choosing the style?

Stick to your own style

Start by celebrating your own personal style and the looks you gravitate toward regularly. The style you choose needs to represent you and the tone of the wedding. Whether you're after something more sophisticated, rock chick or beachy, this will play into choosing a hairstyle that's right for you. “To get the best out of your wedding hairstyle, don’t steer too far away from what you’re comfortable with on your day to day. I see far too many brides veer so far away from how they usually wear their hair that when they look back at their content from the day, the hair or makeup isn’t a true reflection of themselves,” Dom says.

Add some polish, but don't over-style

Some of the best wedding hairstyles keep things simple (and close to your regular style, as above), but just with a little extra polish. “Weddings have got a lot more modern over the years and the same for the hair and makeup. You can never go wrong with your hair down and styled more bridal so an elevation on your everyday, whether it's waves, curls, coils er even straight. You can make it more bridal or detailed by adding hair accessories or by snatching the face doing a half up style.” says Dom. “The same goes if you wear your hair up and you never wear it down, then for sure keep it up, but do it in a way that’s more modern. Skip old-fashioned barrel curls that look crispy and structured. Keep some element of softness so it doesn’t look dated super quick. This gives you the best of both worlds – you're polished, but you still have some element that feels like you," he says.

Make sure you trial it ahead of time

You definitely don't want to wing it on the day and a run-through will enable you to see how the style wears throughout the day. “Have a few sessions with your stylist and play around with styles that fit within your comfort zone,” says Dom. Also ask your stylist to take pictures of the hair from different angles so you have a 360 and can edit any changes or updates you want from there. Take pictures toward the end of the day, too, to see how it lasts.

If you already have your veil, it's a good idea to bring that along for your trial to see how it wears and works with the style. You don't want to find out on your wedding day that the comb doesn't stay in or that it flattens your hair. Ahead of time you can make tweaks so it's perfect on the day.

Any advice on keeping the style in all day?

It's one thing getting the style you want, but it's another thing keeping it. “The biggest key to any style longevity is prep,” says Dom, “I cannot stress it enough. Prepping your hair with the correct products before your style will ensure your hair stays intact and looks great through the most important parts of your wedding,” he adds.

How to beat humidity

"If you’re getting married in humid, muggy weather or weather that’s changing from hot to cold, prep with Color Wow Dream Coat, or for extra defence, try the new Extra Strength version. Both do the same incredible job by blocking out humidity, depuffing hair and blocking any signs of flyaways in their tracks. It gives you waterproof super shiny glass-like strands that resist your style reverting, so all the effort you put into styling your hair for your wedding day will never be ruined. That said, if you love letting your hair do its thing, we're here for all the gorgeous texture, too.

How to maintain oomph

If you want mega volume that’s never sticky or crunchy then you need to build it in. Blow dry a mousse or volume spray to your roots, add a texturiser if you have slippier textured strands, and set it all with hairspray.

How to define curls

Don't be afraid to cocktail products like a hydrating styling cream, with a gel to create shine and hold. Work curl by curl and you can even enhance your own texture further with a skinny-barrelled curling wand.

All in the details

Think about the shape of your dress

Next, consider the shape and style of your dress. A showstopper back deserves to be seen, so an updo, or ponytail could work beautifully.

Lean into the details of your dress

If you've chosen something cool, modern and minimalist, like a clean, white slip dress, you could mirror this with a simple but beautifully executed hairstyle. Maybe leave your hair down but focus on creating something shiny and straight, or try a sleek bun or chignon.

And we love a theme, era or decade to set the tone

The ‘60s and ’70s offer plenty of classic inspo, so go cutesy and throwback with retro '60s references, or statement bows.

Consider the weather

Then there's the weather to consider. If you're braving an alfresco ceremony, you may want to opt for something that's rain-proof, like a slicked back chignon or sleek low braid, in case of showers. On the contrary, if you're planning on getting married somewhere hot, you might want to get your hair off your face with a headband or statement barrettes.
