A love story like no other, we survey Coleen and Wayne's tumultuous relationship …

Coleen McLoughlin and Wayne Rooney met at the tender age of 12 in the Liverpool suburb of Croxteth, but it wasn’t until the pair were 16 that Wayne plucked up the courage to ask her out on a date, after the then-£60-a-week YTS footballer stopped to help her fix her bike on the street.

Wayne signed for Everton and made his professional debut in 2002 – aged 16. The footballer would take a young Coleen into Liverpool’s town centre to buy her clothes.
Within two years, Wayne went from an £80-a-week trainee to a much-celebrated England striker. With it came big money, sponsorship deals and the beady-eyed, full glare of fame…

Wayne proposed to a 17-year-old Coleen in a petrol station in 2003…the £46,000 four-carat, emerald-cut diamond ring he gave her more than made up for the decidedly unromantic setting.

Coleen, meanwhile was still living at home with her parents in her tough Croxteth council estate, and while Wayne’s star continued to rise, our Col was mocked in the media for her, ahem, less-than-designer look and penchant for velour tracksuits.

So Coleen began the long process of polishing her image to fit in with the über-WAGs, bagging herself fashion icon status along the way. Good work, Col!
Yet the hammer blow to her burgeoning joy came in 2004, when it was revealed Wayne had visited a backstreet Liverpool brothel, allegedly enjoying the, um, ‘services’ of a 48-year-old rubber-clad grandma amongst others.

Wayne said afterwards: “Foolish as it now seems, I did on occasions visit massage parlours and prostitutes. It was at a time when I was very young and immature and before I had settled down with Coleen. I now regret it deeply and hope people may understand it was the sort of mistake you make when you are young and stupid.”

Coleen said of the incident: “When the story came out about Wayne and the prostitutes my life was suddenly turned upside down… we’d been together for nearly two years and were engaged to be married. My head was all over the place…The truth is, at that time in our relationship I’d never even slept with Wayne. I was only 16 and we weren’t having that kind of relationship at that stage.”

Coleen wrote in her 2007 autobiography, Welcome To My World: “I didn’t know if I wanted to be with Wayne or not…I told him I didn’t know whether we should keep the relationship going. All Wayne kept repeating was how sorry he was.”

But forgive her fiancé, she did: “Everything wasn’t all right straight away,” Coleen said, “but I knew that if there was a chance of us working things out then trust would have to be rebuilt over time.”

The pair married at a lavish £5million Italian ceremony in 2008. Braving heavy rain on Italy’s romantic Riveria, Wayne and Coleen exchanged vows in a 17th Century palace with close friends, family, and OK magazine present. The bride wore a show-stopping Marchesa gown believed to have cost £200,000, while the groom sang with Westlife at the reception.

On 2 November 2009 Coleen gave birth to their first child, Kai Wayne Rooney, at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital. Kai weighed in at 8 lbs 2ozs, and Coleen left the hospital with her son the very next morning. What a trooper!

The Rooneys continued to amass a huge fortune following their wedding. As well as perfumes, magazine columns and a best-selling autobiography, Coleen has fronted campaigns for highstreet fashion brands George at Asda and Littlewoods. Meanwhile, Wayne has multi-million pound sponsorship deals with Nike, EA Sports and Coca-Cola. The Rooneys currently reside in a £4.5million mansion in Prestbury, Cheshire.

In September 2010, The Rooneys marriage was rocked again by allegations of infidelity as a prostitute came forward to claim that Wayne had slept with her while Coleen was pregnant. The 21-year-old escort, Jenny Thompson, said: “Wayne chased me with sex texts and paid in wads of cash. He didn't seem to care he was betraying Coleen.”

Just days after the first set of allegations, a second woman – 23-year-old single mother Helen Wood – came forward to claim she took part in a threesome with Wayne and escort Jenny.

The same week, the couple issued a statement, neither confirming nor denying the rumours, but asking for privacy, stating: “The last six days have been extremely painful for us and for our families. It is impossible for us, as it would be for any family, to attempt to resolve any issues in the current media glare and against the backdrop of so many inaccurate and intrusive stories. We would therefore ask that the media now respects our privacy and the right of our family to discuss these matters in private."

Reports have claimed that the couple are currently working to save their marriage, while rumours are rife that Coleen is pregnant with their second child. A source told the press: “Maybe that is the secret behind why she appears to have forgiven Wayne so quickly."
