The Saturdays' Style Evolution

From fresh-faced popstrels to grown-up glamazons having it all, The Saturdays once filled the void that Girls Aloud left in our hearts - and on our style radar - and quickly became pop icons. See their fashion journey here...
PA PhotosIt's 2008. The Saturdays – aka Una Healy, Mollie King, Frankie Sandford, Vanessa White and Rochelle Wiseman – burst onto the pop scene with their first smash single, If This Is Love and a penchant for bold, candy colours and thigh-skimming dresses. This is love!
PA PhotosIt wasn’t long – as is surely the case with every girl group ever born – before the girls were exploring the world of coordinating outfits, playing matchy-matchy on every red carpet they hit. Here, at the 2008 BAFTA Kids Awards in London, they opted for LBDs with quirky striped tights.
paTrussed up much like Christmas trees themselves, the jingle belles hit the 2008 Jingle Bell Ball in London in these ruffle-tastic, sequin-heavy mini dresses. Festive? Yes. Stylish? Weeeeell....
PA PhotosWe’re not sure about the matching shoes (clearly, Una wasn’t either, the rebel!), but it's nice to see The Sats embracing 2009 trends with their pretty, ditzy florals. Top marks go to Vanessa for her gorgeous pink petalled bustier and high-waisted colour-block, pleated skirt, and to Frankie for daring to be different in this retro, Pucci-esque print dress.
paOh, dear. Just as things were looking up, style-wise, the girls stepped out in this dodgy melange of leather, ripped denim and studs, baring midriffs and cleavage like their lives depended on it. No, no, no!
paFor 2009’s T4 On The Beach gig in Weston Super Mare, The Sats embraced ice cream colours via satin playsuits in pretty pastels. While we’re not overly keen on their outfits – we do like what’s happening south of their ankles. Those heels are fierce, girls!
paNude hues were oh-so on-trend for autumn/winter 2009 but we’re not convinced by the way the ladies chose to wear them. Shiny ruffles and stretchy fabrics just don’t float our fashion boat, girls.
PA PhotosAs the new faces (and legs, evidently), of Samsung mobile phones, The Sats hit the red carpet in their brightest (and teeniest) outfits – but all that sugary-sweet, rainbow-hued satin is enough to make our teeth ache.
paYowza! Fast-forward just a month and The Saturdays came over all dominatrix for the Girlguiding UK's Centenary Big Gig at Wembley. Frankie’s bra-flashing leather jacket aside, we like the ladies’ tough-girl mini dresses with frou-frou frills and edgy studwork.
paWe’re not sure why, but there’s something about this snap that makes us think The Saturdays were a little bit pleased with their new Balenciaga bags...! If you can look past the giant arm candy, you’ll note that both Mollie and Frankie seemed to be getting into their fashion groove right about now.
pa...But it was business as usual when it came to a 2009 Christmas performance for Capital Radio: showgirl styling and plenty of flesh.
paNow that’s more like it! For Elton John’s 2009 Grey Goose Character & Cocktails party, The Saturdays rocked the red carpet in directional dresses in classic, black, white and nude. We especially love Frankie’s.
PA PhotosHurrah! Come 2010, the girls were back on the red carpet - and not a matchy-matchy outfit in sight. By paying attention to the trends and pulling off high fashion with aplomb, the in-demand quintet soared onto our style radar as they hit London’s Leicester Square for the Valentine’s Day premiere. Mollie King, Una and Frankie get a special mention for their more daring, directional looks.
paJust when we thought it was safe to take our eye off the style ball, the girls’ stylist seemed to run for the hills at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend! Sorry, Rochelle, but this is a boho no-no as far as we're concerned.
paWhere’s Mollie? Maybe she saw the fashion choices for this T4 On The Beach performance and feigned an injury? These in-your-face, cut-away dresses would be enough to send most women scurrying back to the wardrobe department in shame.
paThe mis-matched group give everyone a masterclass in how not to dress for summer festivals. And just when they were doing so well...
PA PhotosOK, so they still have the matchy-matchy thing going on, but The Saturdays showed off a glossier, sleeker incarnation of their former selves at the 2010 Help for Heroes Concert wearing cute mini dresses in delicious, autumnal hues of nude, rose and wine.
Press AssociationWhat a difference a year makes! At the 2010 Jingle Bell ball in London, the girls were preened to perfection, and their metallic-heavy outfits were on the right side of classy.
WennOh, to be young, famous and in Hollywood. Things really stepped up for our girls in 2011, and the States were calling. Outfit-wise, however, this put them on an unstable-footing - though we're giving full marks to Vanessa for that uncharacteristic rockabilly thing she had got going on.
WennMollie upped the ante - and her fashion cred - again massively by bagging male supermodel du jour David Gandy. Alas, it wasn't to be for them, but their dalliance definitely raised Mollie's profile with the style set.
Rex FeaturesAs cute as those printed playsuits are, ladies, we just love how Frankie's quietly got her own look rocking on here.
Rex FeaturesA-list boyfriend alert! Rochelle was next Sat to fall for a fellow star. We don't think that Marvin's had much of an influence on her look, per say, but that Vera Wang wedding dress was awfully beautiful. Swoon!
PA PhotosWe didn't give The Saturdays the GLAMOUR Award for great style in 2011 - they earned Band Of The Year, of course - but there's no doubting they'd've walked it, given their ultra-glam, high octane look. Matchy-matchy mini dresses, begone!
WennUna Healy, the hitherto quiet redhead of the group, almost made us fall off our chairs in mid-2011 when she announced that she and her long-term beau Ben Foden were expecting a Little Saturday. This was her first public appearance following the news. We love a good 'say it on a T' moment!
PA PhotosWe were very impressed with the amount of bare flesh the girls managed to flash without turning blue as they switched on the Oxford Street Christmas lights. What pros.
PA PhotosBona fide pop golden girls: the Jingle Bell Ball 2011.
WennIf ever proof were needed that The Saturdays are all grown up now - in style terms, as well as in their careers and private lives - this picture of a glowing, elegantly dressed foursome emerging from an LA restaurant recently, do it. They're even confident about their labels - that's a skirt and matching shirt by uber-cool Brit designer Olivia Rubin that Rochelle's a-rocking.
We're so proud!
Wenn...And baby comes too! Little Aoife Bell made six as the girls were spotted hitting the shops in LA in we-didn’t-try-to-coordinate-but-look!-this-all-works-well-together-anyway dresses. (A top tip from Rochelle: her Victoria Beckham-a-like sheath is a snip at £25.99 from Missguided.)
Rex FeaturesWhat’s this? Is there trouble in fashion paradise? While each of the girls’ looks was perfectly polished as they stepped out in LA in November 2012 to film more of their reality TV series, they all looked to be on completely different style pages. Mollie’s prim, ladylike tailoring jarred with Rochelle’s beachy dress, which in turn was at odds with Frankie’s scarf...
What’s it all about? Stay tuned – we will!

Fast forward to May 2013 and the girls gathered to celebrate Frankie's burgeoning baby bump.
Molly wore a sequin mini by Needle & Thread, while Vanessa opted for an on-trend cut-out design, Una chose a bit of blue shimmer and the mumma-to-be wore a loose, low-neck dress with a leather jacket.
PA PhotosMollie, Una, Vanessa and Frankie stole the show on the Hangover III red carpet, wearing co-ordinated white frocks and Swarovski jewels. The girls were missing Rochelle, who gave birth to her daughter only days before.
Rex FeaturesThe Saturdays reunited on the red carpet (save Frankie, of course) – and we’re big fans of new mum Rochelle’s printed dress and Mollie’s chic navy jumpsuit.
