Who will be HUGE in 2015? We predict the rising movie & TV stars for 2015
We're in the thrust of awards season and the Oscar nominations are out, giving us a whole new set of names to familiarise ourselves with before they make the big time.
So we've ploughed through the nominations lists, watched the leading films and scanned the internet to uncover the definitive top 10 actors and actresses that are destined for success and stardom in both television and film.
Some you may have heard of (Dakota Johnson will be someone most 50 Shades fans will be au fait with by now), others such as Ruby Rose and Ellar Coltrane are less well known.

PAEllar Coltrane
Ellar Coltrane is the focus of Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, which has been nominated for six Oscars. He was cast in the film when he was just six and finished working on it when he was 18 – yes, it took 12 years to create. Ultimately, he wants to be an artist, but his acting prowess has already been recognised by Hollywood’s elite; earlier this month he won Best Young Actor for Boyhood at the 2015 Critics Choice Awards.
RexGugu Mbatha-Raw
First, let us discuss the pronunciation of her incredible name – it’s said Goo-Goo Mbah-tah Raw. With that out the way, let us discuss Mbatha-Raw’s impressive credentials. She first attracted attention in period drama Belle, documenting the life of real-life historical figure Dido Elizabeth Belle. This year, she has a supporting role in Jupiter Ascending with Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum and The Whole Truth with Renee Zellweger and Keanu Reeves. Earlier this month, she was named one of BAFTAs Rising Star nominees. Start practicing her name now.
PAMiles Teller
Miles Teller is the star of Whiplash, this year’s favourite indie film, about a young musician whose sadistic teacher pushes his talents and mental health to the limit. He plays the lead in his next two films too, Bleed for This, a Scorsese-produced biopic about boxer Vinny Pazienza (for which he's dropped 20 pounds), and in the Fantastic Four prequel, in which he plays Mr. Fantastic himself. The actor is a hot commodity right now and was also offered the role of Dan Aykroyd in the upcoming biopic of John Belushi. He is yet to confirm whether or not he has accepted the part. Nice work if you can get it.
RexLily James
We know this Brit actress now as the graceful Lady Rose MacClare in Downton Abbey, but she’s soon to become much better known when she plays Cinderella in Disney’s latest version, alongside Helena Bonham Carter, Cate Blanchett and Hayley Atwell. Then there’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, in which Austen’s famous 19th century literary family are forced to fight an army of undead zombies. James plays the starring role of Elizabeth Bennet.

David Oyelowo didn’t set out to be an actor. He went along with his A-level theatre studies teacher, who suggested he make a career out of it. Whoever his teacher was, he wasn’t far wrong – he quickly became the talk of the theatre world after becoming the first black man to play the kind of England in Henry VI for a RSC production. He went onto act in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Last King of Scotland and now in Oscar-nominated Selma, in which he plays Martin Luther King.

Swedish actress Alicia Vikander stars in no less than seven films this year, including Testament of Youth – for which she’s already received critical acclaim, The Light Between Oceans and Tulip Fever. You might recognise her from Joe Wright’s adaptation of Anna Karenina, where she played the role of Kitty. She started out as a dancer, but soon realised her calling was acting – cue a thus-far promising career. This year will see her act alongside Hugh Grant, Oscar Isaac, Christoph Waltz and Michael Fassbender (who she is rumoured to be dating). She’s also set to appear with Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl about the first ever sex change in the world, based on a true story; she plays wife of Redmayne’s Einar Wegener, who becomes Lili Elbe.

Will Poulter received BAFTA’s Rising Star accolade in 2014 and his profile has continued to surge ever since. In the critically-acclaimed Maze Runner he played the baddest of baddies and his performance in We’re The Millers with Jennifer Aniston and Emma Roberts earned him MTV’s Best Kiss accolade. The next 12 months will see him act alongside Cara Delevingne in Kids In Love (they’ve already been comparing notes on bushy eyebrows) and The Revenant with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, the revenge story of a man who was left for a dead after being mauled by a bear.

There can’t be many acting jobs as tough as having to force oneself to look desperately attracted to Jamie Dornan and then having to writhe around in bed with him, but Dakota Johnson’s gotta do it the much-publicised film version of 50 Shades of Grey. Before then she was known for her parts in comedies, namely The Five-Year Engagement and 21 Jump Street, but 2015 will undoubtedly be her breakthrough year.
Candice LakeRuby Rose
In Australia Ruby Rose is already a big deal, having made her name as a model, radio host and MTV presenter. She’s poised to become an internationally-known star this year, with her new role in Orange Is The New Black – the US television show’s latest inmate, playing Stella Carlin, the love interest of both Piper and Alex. It sounds juicy and we can expect and hope for plenty of drama, but Rose herself seems like an interesting person to know about regardless. She’s engaged to Roald Dahl’s daughter, describing herself as “gender fluid”; she’s designed her own fashion line; and has also been compared to Justin Bieber, weirdly enough.

Born in Derby, Jack O’Connell’s name has been floating around media circles for some time as a one-to-watch. You might already know him from Skins, in which he played self-destructive James Cook, but he has two films coming out this year that will up his profile considerably; Unbroken, directed by Angelina Jolie, which tells the story of Olympian and WWII hero Louis Zamperini; and Tulip Fever, in which he appears alongside Judi Dench, Alicia Vikander, Cara Delevingne and Cressida Bonas.
