Net-a-Porter has launched a sustainable beauty section & these are the products you should add to your cart
We’re just two weeks into the new year, and Net-a-Porter has already got off on a pretty good foot. At the beginning of the week, they added 27 beauty brands to their Net Sustain edit for the first time ever. As if we needed another reason to love them.
The Net Sustain programme launched back in 2019, and in short, it makes accessing considered fashion (and now beauty - yay!) a whole lot easier. It’s an edit of brands who are meeting certain criteria when it comes to sustainability, and who are setting a good example to the rest of their industry.
Historically, it has been pretty tricky to know what constitutes ‘clean’. And to know which brands are actually doing their bit. Standards are often set by the brands themselves... so this is where Net-a-Porter comes in.
Every single product in the edit has been vetted to fit one or more of the luxury retailer’s very specific categories, including considered materials and ingredients; considered processes; locally made and vegan and cruelty free. Elizabeth von der Goltz, Net-a-Porter’s Global Buying Director said: “Our taxonomy recognizes that every brand will take a slightly different approach depending on the nature of their supply chain and their end product.”
The beauty industry remains the one culprit that contributes the most to global waste, so we’re full of praise for Net-a-Porter. According to market research firm Euromonitor International, beauty companies accounted for nearly 153 billion units (individual pieces of plastic) in 2018. Forty percent of that contained single-use plastic and then wound up in a landfill.
