PA Photos12 Months and already a legend! Music’s new ‘It’ girl and our latest style crush sashayed away with the Best Newcomer crown at the Glamour Women Of The Year Awards 2009 – so we take a closer look at this newcomer’s phenomenal first 12 months in the spotlight.
PA PhotosIt’s hard to believe that Katy has only been on our celeb-radar since July 2008, when the daughter of two church Pastors shook the religious sector to its very Christian core by announcing that not only has she kissed a girl, but she liked it!
PA PhotosI Kissed A Girl, Katy’s first single, was a phenomenal success, holding the top spot of the prestigious U.S. Billboard Chart for seven weeks. It also went platinum in the UK; securing the top slot in the Singles Chart for five weeks, and hit number 1 in 19 other countries worldwide. Not bad for an unknown…
PA PhotosCementing her foray into super-stardom, in October 2008 Katy was not only nominated for two MTV Europe Music Awards, but also asked to host the event. “Do they know what they're getting into? …I was so excited when I heard that I was nominated for two awards,” Katy told MTV, “but when I was asked to host the show I wet myself, Fergie-style.”
PA PhotosIt wasn’t just Katy’s enthusiasm and wacky antics that got people talking about the MTV Awards (she opened the show straddling a giant cherry Chapstick!), her stage outfits stole the show. There was a whopping 12 costume changes in total, including a Manish Aurora fairground carousel skirt and a glitzy, glittery Barrack Obama dress. A new GLAMOUR.com style crush emerged - be still our beating hearts!
Oh, and she also bagged the gong for Best New Act!
PA PhotosKaty’s unconventional look was a breath of fresh air for the style columns – and us GLAMOUR girls just can’t get enough of her quirky, cheeky and often humorous wardrobe. Fusing thrift store finds with vintage and rockabilly-inspired pieces, love it or hate it, Katy’s colourful look always makes for an interesting water-cooler moment!
Rex FeaturesKaty has been in an on-off relationship with Gym Class Heroes front-man Travis McCoy for years. After more than a year of friendship, during which they were “crushing on each other big time,” the two began dating in early 2008. In fact, Katy even appeared as Travis’ love interest in the video for their 2007 single Cupid’s Chokehold.
Rex FeaturesSadly, the too-cool-for-school couple split in December 2008, blaming work pressures and the fact they never saw each other, but they reunited (yay!) in April this year and have never looked cuter together. Aw.
Rex FeaturesKaty wrote or co-wrote every song on her debut album, One Of The Boys. The album has had huge success, with critical acclaim (“move over Gwen Stefani”), and sales totalling 2.3million copies worldwide to date. It has since been certified platinum. Katy continued her love affair with the charts with such hit singles as Hot N Cold, Thinking Of You and the upcoming single, Waking Up In Vegas.

I Kissed a Girl earned her a nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the prestigious 2009 Grammy Awards, and she was nominated in five categories at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, but lost out to Britney Spears (who could have beat Britters at that point!?) However, Britain embraced her and Katy sashayed away with Best New Act at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards, and Best International Female Artist at the 2009 BRIT Awards. And now she has a Glamour WOTY trophy to add to her mantelpiece!
PA PhotosOf course, the journey down the beaten fame-track hasn’t been without its bumps, and Katy’s been no stranger to controversy since stepping onto the scene just a year ago. As well as causing a stir amongst the religious and gay sectors with songs I Kissed A Girl and Ur So Gay, Katy was accused of promoting knife crime after posing with a switch blade for a 2005 fashion shoot (please) and was even slated for wearing a sparkly ‘flying pig’ cocktail ring at the height of the Swine Flu epidemic (PLEASE!).
PA PhotosSo what’s next for music’s favourite ‘It’ girl? Well, as well as her first UK Glamour magazine cover, Katy is currently on her first headlining world tour, Hello Katy, which kicked off in January 2009. She is also set to be a regular on this summer’s festival circuit, with performances at T In The Park and V Festival.
Will Katy’s star continue to soar throughout 2009-10 and beyond? No question…
