This is why Kate Middleton wore red to introduce the new prince
While the Duchess of Cambridge was busy bringing another royal life into the world, her stylist Natasha Archer was otherwise occupied putting together the outfit Kate would wear to introduce said baby to the world.
The choice? A bespoke red shift dress by none other than her go-to designer Jenny Packham - who, by the way, also created custom pieces for the Duchess to showcase both Prince George and Princess Charlotte from the very same steps.
But, as is the case with anything and everything Kate wears, the potential decision-making behind it has kept both fashion fans and royalists entertained ever since.
We break down the three most likely reasons the Duchess plumped for red...
1. A tribute to Princess Diana
While some like to tenuously link everything Kate does to her late mother-in-law Princess Diana, yesterday's suggestion carried more weight than usual.
Thanks to the Jenny Packham number's bold red hue combined with a white Peter Pan collar, many have acknowledged similarities with the dress Diana, Princess of Wales, wore to introduce Prince Harry to the world in 1984.
2. A tribute to St. George's Day
Not only did royal baby number three arrive yesterday, but it was also St. George's Day.
Traditionally an occasion where people wear a red rose on their shirts to honour the patron saint of England and protector of the royal family, it is possible Kate was feeling so patriotic that she insisted she wear the hue all-over.
3. She liked the dress
We know. Outrageous suggestion. But, against all odds, perhaps Kate wore the dress because she liked the way it looked and felt on her just-gave-birth-11-hours-ago body...

Kate always nails chic winter dressing. Case in point? This smart grey coat with a snug fur collar by one of her go-to designers, Catherine Walker, that she wore to the royal family's Christmas Day church service at St. Mary Magdalene Church.

It's great to see Kate supporting a brand like Beulah, who donate a percentage of their profits to support victims of sex trafficking. According to the website, 10 percent of all profits are donated to The Beulah Trust, which was set up to "to give grants that pay for skill courses giving women who have been victims of sex trafficking and abuse the chance to find work, generate an income, and live a self-sufficient life, free from abuse". The dress isn't available yet but will come with a price tag of around £500 but at least profits go to a good cause. Nice work, Kate.

The Buzz: Déjà vu? As the Duchess of Cambridge attended her second royal premiere a couple of days ahead of her first wedding anniversary, her husband was yet again by her side – and toting an umbrella. The duo attended the premiere of the Disney documentary on behalf of the Tusk Trust for which, royal watchers will know, they also hosted an event as in Hollywood, as its patrons, the year before. Kate made her first foray into the rails of hot Brit designer Matthew Williamson for the occasion, coming up trumps with this on-trend, peplum-waisted dress with embellishment that nodded to the African theme. Gorgeous!

The Buzz: For once, the focus was less on the Duchess’ fashion choice – which was universally deemed pitch-perfect – and more on the success of this, her first solo military engagement, in which she presented shamrocks to the 1st Battalion Irish Guards at their St Patrick's Day Parade. Among the recipients was six-year-old Irish Wolfhound Conmeal, the regimental mascot, who reportedly shook his collar in thanks. Ahh.

The Buzz: Style critics went into a frenzy when they spotted the Duchess in this little number – and not just because it was yet another gem from the Great British high street. No, rather, it was because Kate had lent the dress to her mum, Carole, for Ascot in 2010, where she’d been snapped having a jolly time in it. Cue tabloid style wars galore (and, to give her her due, Carole didn’t fare too badly at all).

It was touching,” Alison Croose, from King’s Lynn, told a reporter for the Mail Online. “Diana used to have her hand on his back. Now you see William with his hand on Kate’s back. Kate tends to favour pastels, but this proves that she can carry off bold hues just as well.

"A week ago in Ottawa I spoke of how much Catherine and I looked forward to getting to know Canada and Canadians. I can only say that the experience of this past seven days has exceeded all our expectations," he told the crowd. The Buzz: The being pretty much as close as possible to a tennis dress as you’re going to pluck from a designer rail, Kate did her best to look like ‘one of the gang’ at Wimbledon the day before she and Prince William embarked on their royal tour of Canada. She giggled as her husband joined in with a Mexican wave, and received a lavish bow from Andy Murray as the Scot triumphed in straight sets against Frenchman Richard Gasquet on centre court. The dress, which had previously been reduced to half price in the designer’s summer sale, disappeared from its website within 30 minutes of Kate being spotted in it.

Reportedly, 20 dresses were sold online within two minutes of Kate’s appearance and the trend was quickly dubbed ‘Sholamania’ in a repeat of the demand for Kate’s engagement portrait dress, which was also by Reiss.
