Style Wars: Kate Middleton vs. Kate Moss

Two Kates. Two summer weddings: one royal, one rock. When Kate Middleton marries her Prince William in April, the whole world will be watching a normal girl become a princess; come July, however, all eyes will turn on rock 'n' roll royalty as supermodel Kate Moss ties the knot with muso beau Jamie Hince. Their style may seem poles apart, but read on to be surprised... It's a Kate off!

For her second public occasion as a royal fianceé – and a return to St Andrews, the university where she and Prince William met – in February 2011, Kate Middleton made a bold sartorial statement in this tomato red skirt suit with black accessories.

Kate Moss, on the other hand, added just a splash of red to her classic Breton T and jean look with this Chanel jacket for a spot of shopping at Colette, Paris in March 2010.
Winner: While we love Moss' laid-back glamour, this is one of our favourite Middleton looks – appropriate and daring all in one. Round one to Kate Middleton!

There was a fashion riot to get hold of this £399 navy silk jersey Issa dress when Kate Middleton wore it for it for her official engagement photocall in November 2010. We're digging Wills' coordinating navy suit and jewel-coloured tie, too!
WennKate Moss – Colour Pop
Kate Moss rocked this revealing purple Dior mini dress to a party thrown by the fashion house in February 2011 – and obviously had a fab time in it, as it was ripped when she left.
Winner: Sorry Ms Moss! You look awesome, but Kate's Issa is just too heavyweight to contend with.

Kate Middleton topped her sedate outfit with this black trilby for the Cheltenham Festival in 2008...

...But Kate Moss owns the hat. Here she is at her rock chick best, shopping in Paris in a fedora, matching jacket, shorts and boots.
Winner: While Kate Middleton can pull it out of the bag when necessary, the hat is a Kate Moss style staple, so it's the super who emerges triumphant.

A pre-engagement Kate Middleton looked super-pretty in this lace print coat for the wedding of friends Nicholas van Cutsem and Alice Hadden-Paton in London in August 2009.

At the Help for Heroes Dinner and Auction 2010, Kate Moss ditched the grunge in favour of this ladylike monochrome prom dress and winged eyeliner.
Winner: This is Kate Moss at her supermodel best. We have a champ...
PA PhotosKate Middleton – Suits You
When the occasion calls for a suit, it's the skirt variety that Kate Middleton reaches for. Here she is in textured black with peeptoe kitten heels attending the Gemma Billington exhibition launch in Dublin in April 2007.

In the supermodel corner, it's a trouser suit – and for pleasure rather than business. Kate Moss wore relaxed grey tailoring with a buttoned-down peach shirt, white vest and fedora for a dinner at Sketch with Jamie Hince earlier this year.
Winner: Kate Moss gets the star for her artful upstyling.
Rex FeaturesKate Middleton – Monochrome Magic
Kate Middleton opted for this stunning white silk Temperley dress when she and Wills made an appearance at the Teenage Cancer Trust Christmas Spectacular in 2010.

Kate Moss swung by the opening of the new Topshop store in Knightsbridge wearing a cream Topshop blouse paired with a black jacket, belt and tights – though those heels are by Christian Louboutin. Well, you would, wouldn't you?
Winner: There's barely a whisker in this but we want that Temperley dress in our own wardrobes so badly, we're giving a plus one to K-Midd.
Rex FeaturesKate Middleton – Feeling Blue
As demure as ever, Kate Middleton wore this knee-length, electric blue dress plus her trademark black accessories (including a rather fabulous hat) to the wedding of society chums Harry Meade and Rosemarie Bradford last October.

For her own royal reception – the Women Of Achievement Reception at Buckingham Palace in 2004 – Kate Moss set the fashion agenda in this spookily similar blue dress teamed with a cropped cream fur jacket.
Winner: Is it just us, or does Kate Moss' outfit look a tad unfinished here? A triumph for Kate Middleton.
Rex FeaturesKate Middleton – Black Skirting It
Oh, to be a lady who lunches! A well-heeled Kate Middleton styled her black skirt with a print blouse, black cardigan and Miu Miu handbag for a shopping excursion on Bond Street in the summer of 2009.

When it comes to a black skirt, the only way is leather for Kate Moss. She teamed this slinky number with a fur coat and superstar shades for Christian Dior's spring/summer 2011 catwalk show in Paris.
Winner: Kate Moss. No contest!
PA PhotosKate Middleton – Casual Cool
To walk the cross country course at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials in 2007, Kate Middleton stuck to Sloaney staples: white shirt, navy jumper, tan belt, tastefully-above-the-knee skirt and the ever-present long suede boots.

A dishevelled white shirt is also part of Kate Moss' off-duty armoury (though we bet she's never teamed it with a crew-neck). Here she is out and about in 2008 in her grey skinny jeans, cowboy boots and a beige blazer.
Winner: Kate Moss' street style is legendary. Another triumph for La Moss.
Rex FeaturesKate Middleton – Get Leathered
Trust us, we were just as surprised as you to see Kate Middleton clad in a leather bomber jacket. She wore this grey design over an empire-line blouse, jeans and wedges to watch her royal boyfriend and his brother play polo in the charity Dorchester Polo Cup last year.
Rex FeaturesKate Moss – Get Leathered
...Meanwhile, it was a signature biker style for Kate Moss as she left The Dorchester in July 2010.
Winner: While we applaud K-Midd for branching out, she's no match for the Mosster when it comes to this rock essential.
PA PhotosKate Middleton – Jean Genius
Even black jeans spell an opportunity to work some preppy chic for Kate Middleton. She teamed this bootcut pair with a cricket jumper to watch Prince William and Prince Harry compete in a charity polo match back in 2008.
Rex FeaturesKate Moss – Jean Genius
When it comes to denims, Kate Moss likes hers black – and tight. This biker boot, Chanel bag and lumberjack shirt combo (which she wore to visit her new home in London’s Highgate in February 2011) is typical of her off-duty style.
Winner: Kate Middleton’s look is just too vanilla for our liking. Another victory for Kate Moss.
PA PhotosKate Middleton – Wedge Wonder
For a 2006 outing to the Chakravarty Polo Match in Richmond, Kate Middleton shone in a classic red polka-dot sun dress teamed with strappy raffia wedges. This is one of our favourite looks on her – simple, classic and considered.
Rex FeaturesKate Moss – Wedge Wonder
Move over, Victoria Beckham – Kate Moss knows how to rock airport cool, too! The model arrived in Rio de Janeiro in February in this all-black shorts, sunnies and wedges ensemble.
Winner: La Moss looks smoking but we’re so dotty about Kate Middleton’s summer style, we’re awarding this one to her.
Rex FeaturesKate Middleton – Field Day
When it’s time to hit the great outdoors for Kate Middleton, that tends to mean a polo match appearance. Here she is working a fashion-forward look at the Audi Polo Challenge Polo match in May 2009.
PA PhotosKate Moss – Field Day
Over on Team Moss, what else could an outdoor event mean but a festival? Kate Moss wore this grunge-glam denim and sequins look to watch then-boyfriend Pete Doherty play at the Nokia Isle Of Wight Festival in 2005.
Winner: We love a bit of glitz, so it’s Kate Moss who gets the gold star in this round (though we’d swap her cigarette out for K-Midd’s champagne any day!)
Rex FeaturesKate Middleton: On The Piste
Ever-appropriate Kate Middleton looked comfortable and confident in this monochrome ski outfit for a trip to Klosters, Switzerland, with the royal family in April 2005.
Bigpicturesphoto.comKate Moss – On The Piste
Kate Moss skis too – although, admittedly, she looks looks a little unsteady on this Valentine's weekend 2010 outing at resort in France. We’re giving her top marks for her chic all-black skiwear and that Mulberry bag, though.
Winner: Kate Moss’ innate fashion fabulousness triumphs again!
PA PhotosKate Middleton – In The Trenches
Kate Middleton spawned a thousand column inches when she made one of her first post-engagement appearances in this frill-hem trench coat by British stalwart Burberry.
WennKate Moss – In The Trenches
...But Kate Moss pipped her to that particular style post in 2008 when she was papped in a Burberry trench coat of more classic design on a fashion shoot for US Vogue Magazine in East London.
Winner: We’re giving Kate Middleton the gold for making a great designer statement – and bigging up the British fashion industry into the bargain.
And the winner is: Kate Moss, with 9 to Kate Middleton’s 6. Considering she was up against a supermodel though, it was a valiant effort from the soon-to-be royal – and we predict that her fashion star will only rise higher and higher. Watch this space...
