H&M's autumn collection has arrived to breathe new life into your cold-weather wardrobe
The H&M Autumn Collection has landed on the Scandi retailer's site – and it's perhaps the most elevated high-street launch of the season. Though, at this point, we're far from surprised by how good it is.
From their upcoming H&M Studio AW 2023 collection (which puts decisive, daring and tailored-to-perfection silhouettes front-and-centre) to their recent Innovation Re-Enchantment Design Story and the H&M X Mugler collection of sell-out success), H&M is no stranger to launching viral collection drops. And the release of the aforementioned H&M Fall Collection is certainly no exception.
For the new season – which has crept up on us with surprising speed – high-street stalwart H&M has taken inspiration from the 1990s, where Baroque meets neo-noir through an abundance of romantic and opulent silhouettes.
“Our main source of inspiration came from visually stunning films,” H&M's Concept Designer Eliana Masgalos told us. “The collection is a stylish mix of historic references but with a fiercely modern attitude. It's our contemporary interpretation of romanticism.”
It's this fiercely modern attitude – in spite of the collection's Baroque roots – which makes the collection so irresistible. It channels the here-and-now to perfection, seriously making you reassess your existing back-to-school wardrobe. And your party season wardrobe, for that matter.
The ready-to-wear daytime pieces place the long lines of power suits and leggings in contrast with the billowing volume of ruffled hems, oversized tie-neck tops and wide-leg jeans. The latter – alongside hoodies and oversized winter coats – ensuring the cohort of us who continue to strive for comfort aren't forgotten. There's a strong street style edge to a select number of pieces in the collection, which we're totally in favour of.
Other key daytime pieces to note? The denim maxi skirt, which pays homage to one of the most major trends of the year, and the abundance of faux leather. The brand's leather blazer pairs perfectly with a white tee, Adidas Sambas and a pair of boyfriend jeans.
When it comes to those more occasion-appropriate pieces, power shoulders, narrow waists and elongated lines feature among the line-up of long dresses and statement tops.
Lace, lingerie-inspired detailing and pearl embellishments elevate each piece – ensuring they look endlessly expensive than they actually are – while a neutral colour palette of off-white, black and silver plays into the season's continuing penchant for quiet luxury.
Transparency achieved through sheer fabrics is another key feature among those pieces that are best suited to sensual dinners and Christmas parties, evoking a sensual spirit and employing lingerie details in a way the brand has never used them.
Set against sleek leather-look fabrics and dainty, delicate details, each look is both streamlined and opulent.
As for the accessories? Elevated feminine details such as pearls, bows flounces and pin-tucks are juxtaposed with studded and heavy metal detailing across bags, jewellery and shoes. There's an oversized shopper which makes a strong case for ditching your laptop backpack, as well as winter boots which have a slight equestrian touch to further cement the collection's heavy romantic vibe.
The H&M Autumn Collection is available to shop from today, 14th September, in-store and online at HM.com.
