Trend: Big Hair Buns
Ladies, grab your kirby grips and hair bobbles, buns are back for spring summer and they're bigger and bolder than ever before. Everyone from Christopher Kane to Philip Lim jumped on board the bun train at the spring summer shows sending models down the runway with their own take on the classic bun, from low slung and dishevelled to high and elegant. To help you get to grips with this year's hottest hair trend we've asked the experts for their top tips on creating this hot new look...

Glamour guide: Catwalk up-do’s included the ballerina bun which is a great way of incorporating the wet-look trend. Start with wet hair and scrape it all back to a centre low band. Secure hair in the middle of your head just above the hairline, don’t go any higher or lower or it’ll be uncomfortable. Then start twisting hair clockwise or anti clockwise and keep on twisting until you’ve got a little tension then wrap it back around the band and you’ll get a figure of 8 until it goes circular. Use small grips rather than large pins to secure – large pins can kink out the other side and be uncomfortable. This is a great look for round, heart and oval shaped faces.

Laurent Philippon for Bumble and BumbleGlamour guide: We love a loose, pretty bun taken up a notch to add some interest, which looks sexy and edgy, great for day or evening. To achieve this look spray hair with Bumble and Bumble Prep Spray before blow drying and adding a final spritz of Bumble and Bumble Styling Lotion for a soft shiny finish with medium hold. Create a centre parting then sweep hair back into a low pony tail, leaving out small face-framing pieces at the front. Next, bring the pony into a chignon and pin at the sides. Finally pull out a few small pieces to create accents.

Michael Barnes for Michael BarnesGlamour guide: Women who can take all their hair off their face will look great wearing the tight pulled back look but if this is too harsh for you then try wearing it with a fringe. If you’re growing out your hair try cheating by slicking the hair back using KMS Hyperpaste and then fasten or pin hair into a ponytail using a covered band. If you don’t have enough hair to wind into a bun take a leaf out of the model’s books and attach a hairpiece to make the bun. Twist the ponytail and wind into a bun pinning using bobby pins as you go.

The greater the surface area of hair that you can tuck away from sight, the more it’s protected from UV and fade. Try moving it around your head to different positions every day so you’re not always placing stress on the same part of the hair when it’s up.

Jon Chapman, AvedaGlamour guide: Hair was smooth, elegant and incredibly sleek at the spring summer shows for Rodarte, Philip Lim and Gianfranco Ferre. High side buns were created by applying Aveda Volumizing Tonic from roots to ends to give body to the hair. Hair was then blow dried smooth. Next Aveda Light Elements Smoothing Fluid was worked through the hair to get a high gloss sheen. Working from a side parting and using a bristle brush hair was swept up into a side ponytail and then pulled through a ‘doughnut’ (you can get these from Boots or your local Chemist) and then wound round, secured into place using Kirby grips. Aveda Brilliant Spray on shine was spritzed liberally on hair for gloss and finally, any fly-away hairs were smoothed down using Aveda air control.

Paul EdmondsGlamour guide: Side partings are big news again this season so start by giving yourself a definite low part by drawing the end of your comb from the crown to your forehead. Take the hair into a low pony tail and secure with a band. Next back comb your pony tail and spray to add texture. Then cover with a fine net secured at the top with a grip behind the elastic. Push all of your hair into the net and mould into a bun shape and secure with grips. If you are looking for a messier bun look, after back combing and spraying, instead of using a net, start wrapping the hair gradually around the hair tie, securing with grip underneath the sides of the bun which is being formed. Let small strands escape to give it a relaxed look.

Wella ProfessionalsGlamour guide: Buns aren’t only great for straight hair, curly girls can have fun with this look too. Spray on Wella Professional High Hair Leave It Long on damp hair to prep hair and blast it dry using a paddle brush for a frizz free sleek finish leaving some curls loose ready to fall out of the bun. Sweep hair into a ponytail in the middle of your head then spray the ponytail with System Professional Ultimation hairspray. Place a hair doughnut around the ponytail, this will allow you to create the illusion of a large bun then tilt your head forwards slightly so your hair naturally falls around the doughnut. Twist the end of your hair around the doughnut and fix with a hair band, pin any loose ends into the bun and spray again with System Professionals Ultimation for a sleek style.

Laurent Philippon for Bumble and BumbleGlamour guide: At the VPL spring summer shows we focused on objects that possessed volume as the result of captured air or water – parachutes, kites, jellyfish, etc, so the hair was made to look like a deflated parachute. To get this look smooth on Bumble and Bumble Prep and Styling Creme from roots to midshaft. Then roughly blow dry the hair upside down – this helps to push more air and volume into the hair. Gather hair into a high, loose ponytail slightly off to one side of the head, then braid and wrap around the base. Spritz on Spray de Mode into the palm then smooth over the head to tame flyaways.

Wella ProfessionalsGlamour guide: Avoid looking like a headmistress by having fun with this trend. This dramatic look was created by using two doughnuts for real impact. Spray on High Hair Crystal Styler at the roots of the hair to give the hair plenty volume, hold and protection from any heat damage whilst styling. Draw back the bulk of the hair to form a ponytail devoid of flyaways and fix in position with a length of elastic to keep it really clean and tight. Twist the ponytail around both doughnuts them pinning up any loose ends for a smooth round shape. Once finished spray hair with a mist of High Hair Finishing Spray to hold everything in place.
