March: Famed for her raven haired bob, Jessie J pledged to shave her hair off live on TV’s Comic Relief show this year if enough money was raised. Lo, the nation dug deep into their pockets and Jessie headed straight for the clippers.

July: Meanwhile, on the catwalk, Jean-Paul Gaultier seriously shook up the art of hair colouring at his couture show when he showcased leopard-printed locks. Although this didn’t catch on more widely, it was one of the beauty highlights of the shows.

June: From the moment she first burst onto the scene, Rita Ora's head of platinum blonde bouncy curls quickly became her trademark. But this summer the How We Do hitmaker completely changed up her look and proved she was far from a one-trick hair, erm, pony opting for longer silken blonde locks instead – and we loved it.

June: Another one to trade up her signature style was The Saturdays’ perennially pixie-cropped Frankie Sandford. The then-pregnant star made waves when she was spotted leaving a salon with a Kate Middleton-esque blow-dry. But when you work short and sharp crops as well as Miss Sandford, it was clear Frankie would return to her famous ‘do - weeks later.

May: Pixie crops have been big news throughout 2013 and whilst she stole most of the pixie crop headlines the year before thanks to her dramatic haircut in Les Mis, Anne Hathaway made sure she still had a slice of the pixie crop news-making pie in 2013 when she turned up to the annual Met Gala in New York with a completely different look. Having gone platinum blonde just hours before her red carpet arrival, Anne’s dye-job was all we could talk about the following day (read: month).

August: But Anne wasn’t alone this year in her pixie cropped-brilliance. Enter one Coco Rocha who live tweeted and filmed her dramatic haircut for American publication Allure.

August: But we could barely believe our Instagram feeds when she of the bounciest curls ever – Beyoncé – debuted a beautifully delicate and very short style on her social media accounts during her world tour in August.

November: However, if you’re looking for a headline-worthy pixie crop; none hold a candle to Jennifer Lawrence. May: This year’s Met Gala had a punk theme, and while some attendees merely nodded to the trend with a quiff, we had to applaud Nicole Richie’s hair white-out which although not classically punk, did look totally awesome – especially paired with a berry red lipstick.

February: It was this image at the SAGs in January that provoked an in-depth investigation as to how this silly man-ffant, fluffed-up blow-dried hairdo ever came into being. It shouldn't happen to an Oscar nominee...

September: Suffice to say that it wasn’t Miley Cyrus’ bunches that dominated the headlines after the VMAs but those 90s-tastic mini buns were a throwback too far for us.

February: But the 90s very much worked for us at the Chloe show this season. Sporting gloriously low-maintenance locks, this low-slung ponytail at the nape of the neck was our very favourite.

October: Before this, we would never have pegged Selena Gomez as a hair and beauty rebel. However, the former child star proved she can hold her own when she worked this gloriously throwback ‘do for a TV appearance, complete with 90s staples the scrunchie and tightly bound roots. All that was missing was the brown lip liner.

November: Aside from the brouhaha surrounding her comeback video, Hard Out Here, (which we loved, BTW) Lily Allen’s ponytail in it was another highlight for us on the Beauty Desk. Bearing more than an uncanny resemblance to Spice Girl Mel C’s in the Say You’ll Be There video, we loved the unashamed 90s-ness of it all.

October: Famous brunettes going blonde became a bit of a running theme in 2013, but the most surprising honey-hued makeover for us was Kim Kardashian’s. After giving birth to her first daughter in June, sightings of Kim over the following summer were few and far between until she made her big comeback with one of the best-looking dip-dyes we’ve seen in a while.

October: But it wasn’t just Kim K who hit the bottle, Johnny Depp also traded up his famous dark locks for something a little lighter. Although this was just for a movie role, we had to admit that we were looking forward to JD ditching the Hugh Grant curtains and returning to his chestnut tresses.

February: Even GIRLS star Zosia Mamet traded in her Shoshanna hair for this light blonde colour.

October: Where Leigh, Zosia, Johnny and Kim lead, Yasmin Le Bon follows (not strictly true, of course) as the brunette model is another famous face to have swapped her naturally dark locks for this platinum shade.

November: After signing on as the first ever face of L’Oreal Professional's in-salon brand INOA in February, we were waiting for the moment that the brunette model made a splash in the hair department. Lo, come November and Alexa Chung had reinvented the Rainbow Hair trend; opting for pastel hues throughout layers which were then whipped up into Heidi hair plaits. Pass us the hair chalks, stat!
FlynetMan knots are now a thing
October: Popular with the likes of Proudlock from Made In Chelsea, “man knots” have filtered their way down from male festival goers to TV personalities and beyond this year. Case in point: Hollywood star Jake Gyllenhaal now has one.

September: Whether it’s thanks to Marc Jacobs sending his models down the runway with choppy bobbed wigs or there’s just something in the water, bobs have been big, big news this year.
