Eva Green's Film Fashion

Eva Green plays Miss G, a swimming instructor at a 1930s English boarding school and Alison Byrne worked hard so that the outfits the teacher wore would reflect her personality.
Eva is currently the face of Dior and Alison started with this iconic brand when choosing what her character should wear. “Dior were very interested in helping us with our vintage collection,” she says. “So I went to Paris where they had chosen some pieces and we used some very contemporary knitwear and a very 30s dress - which worked really well.”

“A couple of the recent collections from Galliano were inspired by or based on Marlene Dietrich. Some we just used as sample patterns and remade them out of more period fabric and slightly changed the design.”

Alison also went back to catalogues and archives of photographs from 1930’s England to understand the style of the period. “It’s amazing how many people I worked with who had photographs of their grandparents from the 1930s,” she says.

“We decided that Miss G would have a really diverse exotic wardrobe,” says the director. “But that the rule was, her clothes had to either look like she could have made them herself, or that she would have scavenged them from estate sales and jumble shops.

“She had to be very avant garde and theatrical, but believable in terms of her look being entirely self generated.”

“It was important not to go overboard on her costume because she is such an open-ended character,” says Byrne. “Her costumes can be quite extreme so the important thing was to make them seem real and not appear like a costume or collection.”

“Eva was great to work with…. When I met her first she had costume books and reference books. She had done her research and was really into collaborating in finding the character.”

“The uniforms are true to the era, but weirdly they're also timeless,” says Jordan. “I think I wore something quite similar at my junior school. Alison did however [add] a puffed sleeve, which gave them a bit of flair.”
