In response, the Shape of You singer deleted his Twitter account, only to reactivate it hours later.

But the episode’s director Jeremy Podeswa has now come to Ed's defence explaining to Newsweek: “I think Ed did a lovely job – he’s a lovely actor and a lovely person.”

He continued, “He was appropriate for the part because he needed to sing. If people didn’t know who Ed was, they wouldn’t have thought about it twice. The hoo-ha seems to be from things that are outside of the world of the show. In the world of the show he did a lovely job, and he looks like he belongs in that world.”

The show producers confirmed the news that the Glastonbury headliner would appear in the penultimate series in March.

Speaking at the SXSW film festival in Texas, producers Dan Weiss and David Benioff revealed they'd been trying to get Ed on the show for a long, long time. But why? They said they had been trying for ages as a surprise for Maisie Williams (who plays Arya Stark), who is a huge Ed Sheeran fan, and they finally pulled it off. How sweet!

As for Ed, he kept it short and sweet on Twitter saying: "Guess the cat's out the bag".

It was also confirmed that the final season of the series (season 8) will only have six episodes, but you can bet they'll be damn good ones.

We wonder what sort of role Ed will have? A warrior, peasant, royal or giant, perhaps?

Here's some pics of Ed Sheeran loving life (just because)...
