However, fast-forward an hour or so and the pop princess was soon up to her old Christmas tricks; twerking on Santa in rhinestone cowboy boots - of course.

Pre-bob-makeover Miley, wore a black suede sleeveless wrap halter top and side-zip skirt by Calvin Klein Collection. She teamed the look with a simple red lip before taking to the stage to perform a medley of her hits.

She’s known for her outlandish stage attire and Miley didn’t disappoint in a festively sequinned two-piece. In keeping with the Christmas tradition she replaced the infamous foam finger with a candy cane, performing We Can't Stop as well as a cover of Lana Del Rey's Summertime Sadness and Wrecking Ball.

Showing off her famously toned abs to devastating effect in a midriff baring top and printed trouser ensemble, Ellie Goulding also performed on the night.

Across the pond though and there was another Jingle Bell Ball in full-swing: arriving on the red carpet Selena Gomez looked the epitome of winter chic in this grey dress and knit look. However, the evening took a bit of a turn for the pop starlet when she reportedly cut her performance short due to technical difficulties.
