This new Netflix documentary is the bank holiday empowerment you need

Feminist characters and storylines are FINALLY starting to be embraced in Hollywood, and Netflix’s latest documentary may be its most empowering yet. Bring Down The House, a feature-length film based on real-life events, tells the compelling story of four remarkable women who ran primary campaigns in the 2018 midterm elections.

Female democrats, Amy Vilela, Cori Bush, Paula Jean Swearengin and Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, collectively marked a historic moment in American politics when they took on ruling-class politicians in attempt to revive the Democratic party and return power to the people.

Rachel Lears, the film’s director, told The Guardian, ‘the purpose is to tell a story about a historic moment, and what it was like for the people inside, and how the politically impossible becomes possible’.

While each woman’s campaign was massively progressive, it is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who comes out on top and emerges as the true star of the show. The film’s intimate behind-the-scenes footage tracks her rising profile in American politics, culminating in her appointment as the youngest woman in history to be elected into Congress at 29.

It is difficult to emphasise how remarkable Alexandria’s victory was. She was a young, working-class woman of colour entering a traditionally elitist, male dominated space - her opponent was 72-year-old Anthony Pappas. It is not, however, difficult to understand how she defied these odds within minutes of witnessing this girlboss powerhouse in action.

In the age of Donald Trump, this is exactly the empowering, inspirational story of four women debunking and challenging stereotypes that we’ve been waiting an eternity for. Bravo, Netflix!
