Summer's 21 Best T-Shirts

There are some items wardrobe items that we would be forever lost without - jeans, a reliable dress and the humble yet mighty T-shirt.

How grateful we are that the US Navy went for such an understated, comfortable and timeless option during the Spanish-American war of 1898; and what a blessed gift that Marlon Brando in Streetcar Named Desire made us feel like you can look pretty damn sexy in them too.

There was a time when we felt that the T-shirt was doing more harm than good - in the early Noughties when some men it wise to wear tees with rapey slogans, or those with the not-so-witty FCUK acronyms. Also, be gone those with any kind of "Keep calm and carry on" wordplay and same goes for banter slogans. As someone in Love Actually once said about a totally different matter, "Enough now."

But we live in enlightened times today and the T-shirt still remains majestic, glorious even. They go with everything, look so effortless, but also sexy if you should want to, and they're also comfortable. They'll never let you down and they always look good. They're essentially the fashion equivalent of Ryan Gosling.
