9 best scalp sunscreens, recommended by dermatologists & tested by editors

Dermatologists are unanimous on this one: scalp sunscreens are a must. Slightly annoying news for anyone trying to preserve a fresh blow dry at all costs, but important nonetheless. By now, applying body suncream, face SPF and an SPF lip balm is hopefully second nature. So working a scalp sunscreen into your routine is really just the next step, especially once the sun makes an appearance. The good news is that scalp sunscreens have come a long way since greasy formulations of the past, and there are now plenty of scalp suncreams that protect without leaving you with greasy-looking roots. Phew.
“Women are essentially bald at their hair partings,” says Zaineb H. Makhzoumi, MD, a director of clinical services and head of dermatologic surgery and oncology at University of Maryland Medical Center. It’s not exactly chic, but she’s right. Most of us part our hair in the same place every single day, which means that one strip of scalp gets hit by damaging, cancer-inducing UV rays on repeat. In other words, this is not the step to skip. “Since most women don’t like greasy, messy lotions and creams in their hair, I typically recommend using a powder-based or spray sunscreen,” she says.
So, if you’re ready to give your scalp the protection it deserves this summer, we’ve done the hard work for you. We asked a handful of board-certified dermatologists for the scalp sunscreens they actually recommend, and added our own tried-and-loved favourites while we were at it. The brief? Formulas that keep your parting protected without undoing all your styling efforts.

How I tested scalp sunscreens:
A huge part of my job as Glamour’s beauty writer is testing products, from vitamin C serums and hair growth serums to LED light therapy devices and, yes, scalp SPFs. But that doesn’t mean trying something once and calling it in. It means weeks, months and sometimes even years of testing to see whether a product actually does what it promises.
When it came to scalp SPFs, I started by speaking to dermatologists, doctors and hair experts about what really works when it comes to protecting your scalp from UV damage. I then looked into ingredients, reviews, price points and expert recommendations to shortlist the products in this guide. I tested each one on my own hair, which is relatively coarse and dry, and made note of how it felt to apply, whether it left a white cast and if it made my hair feel greasy.
Why you can trust me:
I’ve been a beauty writer for six years now, and testing, reviewing and recommending products has always been a huge part of my job. SPF is a topic I take seriously, especially as someone who, many moons ago, used to bask in the sunshine wearing body oil and absolutely no protection (awful I know). These days, there’s no way I’d leave the house without my face sunscreen, and after speaking to dermatologists and skincare experts, I’ve also learnt just how important it is to protect your scalp too.
As someone who lives in slick-back ponytails, I’m used to working a fair bit of product into my hair, so adding a scalp SPF into my routine felt pretty natural. Personally, I love a stick formula because it helps tame flyaways while giving that sleek finish, but I made sure to test a range of options, from sprays and mists to powders and sticks, so there’s something in this guide for every hair type and preference. I also love that many of these formulas can double as face SPF, and because I’m big on hair health, I made sure to include products that do more than just protect, but hydrate your scalp too.

Your hair sunscreen FAQ's, answered:
Should you put sunscreen on your scalp?
“You should protect your scalp all throughout the year,” says Dr. Brauer. “While it is often forgotten, when unprotected, the scalp is consistently exposed to the sun, and persistent exposure can result in sunburn, sun damage, and possibly skin cancer.”
What is the best sunscreen for scalp and hair?
There are many products, like many of those above, that are designed specifically with the scalp in mind. But if you don’t have access to scalp sunscreen, regular sunscreen also works, says Dr. Brauer. “When choosing a scalp sunscreen, it is important to look for a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protective product with an SPF 30 or higher,” he says. It’s also a good idea to limit sun exposure and seek shade, particularly during peak afternoon hours, and wear a hat for additional coverage, he adds. Don’t forget to reapply throughout the day too.
When asking Dr Nora, Cosmetic & medical dermatology doctor at Rejuvenation Clinic for her top scalp sunscreen picks, she said: Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher that’s labelled safe for scalp or hair use. A few great options include:
- Coola Scalp & Hair Mist SPF 30 – invisible, non-greasy, and hair-friendly
- Supergoop Poof SPF 35 – a dry shampoo-style powder with added sun protection
- La Roche-Posay Anthelios Invisible Spray SPF 50+ – ultralight, easy to apply, and suitable for the scalp
How often should you apply a scalp sunscreen?
Skincare expert Dr. Nora said: "Reapply every two hours when outdoors, or more often if you’re sweating or swimming. Since reapplying on hair can be tricky, pairing SPF with a physical barrier like a wide-brimmed hat or cap offers extra protection when you’re on the go."
Can you get skin cancer from a scalp sunburn?
“Yes – scalp sunburns can increase your risk of skin cancer, including melanoma. The scalp is often overlooked but especially prone to UV damage in people with thinning hair or bald spots. Chronic sun exposure here can also lead to actinic keratoses—precancerous patches that feel rough, scaly, or sandpapery, and may appear red, pink, or flesh-toned. They’re particularly common on the scalps of balding men, and if left untreated, can progress into squamous cell carcinoma. So yes, SPF on the scalp is a must.” - Dr Nora.
How to put sunscreen on the scalp without making hair greasy?
We're all for scalp protection, but anything that's going to leave our freshly washed locks filled with grease is a BIG no no. To avoid repeating hair wash day, Dr Nora said: “Go for lightweight, non-greasy formulations specifically designed for the scalp. Sprays, mists, and powder-based SPFs work well—they absorb quickly without leaving the hair heavy or oily. If you have a visible parting, using a stick sunscreen directly on the exposed skin is another great option to avoid product buildup on the strands.”
