What should I look for in a running belt?

As I've tested near hundreds in my time, I know the difference between a good belt and a bad one. My all-time top pick is the Nike Slim Waist Pack – it does what it says on the tin, doesn't move and is purse-friendly, too. I opted to wear Lululemon's Fast and Free Run Belt during my most recent marathon as there was slightly more room for my phone and a pack of baby wipes (to wipe any sticky fingers covered in gels).

Make sure the circumference of the belt will fit you, and is adjustable. Adjustable is best so you can alter to wear over winter layers. You'll normally wear your running belt around your hips, so make sure to measure there before you buy. This Sweaty Betty adjustable running belt is a good example.

If you want to carry water with you while you run, make sure you're buying a belt that has holsters to hold your bottles in. This 2XU design has holsters on each side for gels or sports bottles, while this Camelbak running belt comes with it's own leak-proof and insulated bottle.

Plus, it sounds obvious, but one very important thing to watch out for: do make sure the running belt will actually fit your phone before you buy. If you've got one of the newer iPhones, you'll need a slightly bigger running belt than normal, like the Abeter running belt on Amazon. If you run without wireless headphones, it's worth opting for a belt that has a hole for your headphone wire.
